I took a ride Sunday to see the falls at Pisgah Gorge. Hard to get a pic that does them justice, each of these are about 100 feet high. I didn't get a photo of my hat, which was the Knox straw I recently got. It ended up being a pretty poor choice. It was sunny and 75 at my house but up in Pisgah, about 2 hours ride to the north, it was cloudy and 51.

Today called for a drive through the town of Hornitos is northwestern Mariposa County. Hornitos has been described as one of the better preserved ghost towns. It was a sleepy little community until gold was discovered. It ballooned to 15,000 people and was famous for being one of the roughest mining towns in the Mother Lode. The population is currently listed as 75 and that’s optimistic. It’s also famous for as the birthplace of Ghirardelli Chocolates, and Ghirardelli still owns the ruins of the old general store.

Moving into Bear Valley (one of several in California) and the town of Mariposa:

The low stone walls are very common up here and predate the use of barbwire. The walls were made partly by Chinese immigrants who were little more than slaves.

The courthouse is the oldest continually operating courthouse west of the Rockies.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventure. Stunning trip to your neighborhood.

Took a drive down to Prattville, AL, and saw the old Pratt cotton gin factory.

And a few other cool things.

Excellent! I bet that is a Sinclair dinosaur. Boy does that bring back memories. Gorgeous pics, company and adventure. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Eric, and good eye... a Sinclair dinosaur, indeed, although a little out of his element. He was standing guard at the entrance to a paintball park. Just one of the many reasons I enjoy driving on the old roads instead of the interstate.

Yesterday I took a nice long drive up AL hwy 75 along Sand Mountain up into northwest GA. The covered bridge is Horton Mill bridge, just northeast of Oneonta, AL. The next to last photo is fog rising on Lookout Mountain seen from the top of Sand Mountain. If you can zoom in on the old barn, you'll see what's left of the See Rock City sign. It's been a good little while since I've seen one of these. They used to be a common sight in the southeast. The tree man was in Trenton, GA, best I remember.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, bridges and clouds and a man made of wood. What are the details on that hat you're wearing in the selfie? :D

Okay, seriously, there isn't one location in any of your photos where I wouldn't want to hang out for a while. I could probably spend an hour just exploring that bridge. Or that barn. I gotta' get out of the city more often.

The hat's a Churchill... I'm guessing maybe from the 70s.

I did spend about an hour at the covered bridge. There was a path from the road down to the creek below.

The old barn was tempting....but it seemed like maybe a good way to get shot at so I just snapped some pics from the road and kept driving.

Potential legal issues aside, I'm always cautious if property lines and boundaries aren't clearly indicated. When in doubt, I stay out. Even when I do encroach I'm respectful of whatever I might find, 'cause it ain't mine.

Jiminy cricket that's a high bridge! The second set of photos give it a whole different perspective. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the folks who built those high bridges and trestles by the "primitive" means available at the time. That they have endured all this time credits the skill and care put into their construction (and upkeep!).

Any idea of the time frame on this bridge? I'm guessing early 1910-20s at the latest, just based on the history of bridges in my part of the world, but I am not well educated on such things.

Had some days off from work I needed to use up, so I've been having sort of a staycation this week. Monday Peanut and I went down to the Cahaba River National Preserve and distracted ourselves from the covid and everything else that's going on.

Darn it Dale that appears to be a perfect day off Covid adventure! Glorious scenery in your part of America. The terrific pictures really showcase the topography to it's finest. Like Zombie said, I too would to hang in your world for a while. The stream pic is precious. What a feast for the eyes.

Thanks sir for adding to this thread. Go Georgia (and of course Dale).

+1 sir! Tonight I am thinking of outdoor weekend adventure spots friendly in the Covid world.

Cheers, Eric -
