I stopped in to say hello to the priest who was delivering the homily at my brother-in-law’s funeral... an old family friend who we had not seen in several years. He looks up at me as I was wearing my short brimmed black GA Dunn Fedora.... smiles broadly and loudly proclaims.. “My Jewish Rabbi friend!”

My wife Tina, as many of you know, is something of an artisan with a needle and thread. Yesterday she wanted to go to her favourite fabric shop. A place called Hansons, in the market town of Sturminster Newton. She's the kid in the candy store when let loose in there.
Yours truly was pressed into chauffeur duties, it's about 75 minute drive away, but the roads were quiet and we were there reasonably quickly. Tina is well known at the store, on seeing me the lady behind the counter quipped: "You have him well trained." "He has his plus points," my missus answered. "But so well turned out," the lady said, and then added, "both of you of course." By now my wife had her eyes on the fabrics so there was no point engaging with her, kid in the candy store, remember.
After what seemed an interminable time I heard: "Ready?" She was laden with fabrics, all folded and packaged, I tell you, the UK economy will have no problem bouncing back, she can do it single handed. "Coffee?" I asked, hopefully. "Actually," Tina replied, "I called Harvelle," we are dining out." Harvelle and Martin run a country pub called, The Drovers, we going to their wedding in August. "Sounds good to me," I replied.
The current covid restrictions meant that all hospitality businesses, including pubs, must be outdoors. Fingers crossed, although the weather was bright, dark clouds would periodically pass over. The Pub was in full swing, I think cabin fever has taken a hold across our Island.
We had a table reserved, to which we were directed and had no sooner sat down than a lady approached and said: "How wonderful you both look," and to me she added, "how a hat makes a gentleman look so distinguished." We thanked her and I leaned over to Tina and whispered: "Distinguished? Me?" "You scrub up well," replied my missus, dismissively.
Harvelle's fellow, Martin, plays in a band when he's not pulling pints of beer. There was a few band members there who put on an impromtu show, and what a great afternoon it turned out to be.
Lockdown has been, or seems to have been, forever, so yesterday was all the more pleasurable. Distinguished, I can't get over that.

To which she replied: "Your trousers, I make. Your shirts, I make. Your hats, that's for you to source. Well there you go, permission to blow the budget.
We are off to a friends garden party later today. A lady who has a large plot of land behind her house. I'm told that she has had a marquee put up, but hopefully the weather will hold. There's going to be a large number of guests so it's a case of bring your own meal.
Leaving Tina to get our fold up camping chairs and table and having given the MG a bit of a spruce up, I went to the supermarket for some salad things, chicken from the deli and a bottle of chilled white. A young couple kept looking my way, I smiled back, I saw the young lady encourage her fellow. He approached me and said: "That's got to be your classic MG in the car park." "It certainly is," I replied. He then complimented my attire and his lady said: "Your hat finishes off the look perfectly, what kind of hat is it?" "It's known as a fedora," I said. He immediately got his phone out, started flicking through various screens and scrolled down to a very similar one to mine, it might have been from Lock & Co. He announced that fedoras are cool. So there you have it Loungers, a twenty something has verified that this seventy something is officially, cool.

In Canada with the questionable perspective of our Prime Minister who is on the record saying our reopening will require 75% of the populace having 2 doses......we are a long ways away from the pictures you posted above. It shall be another quiet summer here.

To you all, thank you. I really would have liked to posted a picture of my wife wearing her new coat and lounge pants that she had made, but the lady went camera shy so I left well alone.
belfastboy, the UK had a shaky start to the vaccine roll out but once the first wave was complete much was learned and inoculating the country's population gathered at a good pace. Yesterday the rain held off but it turned quite chilly in the evening. A crowd of us gathered in a heated cabin just to engage in small talk and relish the simple pleasure of human contact and most enjoyable it was too.

I walked into a wine shop yesterday wearing my 1950's Borsalino. (bought from Moon!). The proprietor said in a very french accent that he loved my hat. When I informed him it was a Borsalino he replied...."Well, of course!". My wife informed him that I was a hat maker and he said one day he would love to learn how to make a hat. I told him I was planning on running courses once the pandemic is in hand. So I may have my first student.

My hats do get noticed, but don't draw many comments. Sometimes I can see them thinking about saying something, but they never quite get there. However, having hair to the bottom of my ribcage, a gorilla face mask for the pandemic, and a 5" goatee protruding from the bottom of it, the hat might not necessarily be the standout feature...

I don't think of Indiana Jones as much as a generic wanderer when I see that hat. If it was my size and I could get my hands on it, I'd wear the heck out of it! Great unkempt style!

Now that I have a beard, I no longer get Indiana Jones comments. It has been a while since I received any comment. Hopefully that means my hats and I have melded into something that looks natural together.
