Tatton Baird Hatters

Inferior? Yes sir, for my own use a soft felt is inferior. And seemingly inferior to the entire western hat market as well. Folks vote with their wallets. You and I have the same old discussion once a month. You buy them. I generally just build my own.

You keep telling us all dozen or your hat makers say it simply isn't possible using modern felt.

Now you have a hatter that built you something close to what you want...and you're still here, "I was absolutely sure such a hat was not possible using modern Winchester felt, but the proof is in hand."

Good luck with all that!

You seem to have some personal stake in defending Winchester. People do vote with their wallets and apparently cheap plastic junk at Walmart is what they prefer. As for cowboy hats, wool is most popular followed by rabbit. The people have spoken so is that the best? I work around many working cowboys and most all of them wear junk. Many wear Shantung year around, and most of the others wear the cheaper rabbit fur felt Stetsons and Resistols.

I’ve admitted that what I once thought impossible from Winchester dress weight beaver is possible (dress weight fedora, not the westerns we’re talking about), but without being able to point to anyone who has succeeded in making what I want from western felt you insist it’s possible. Then you accuse the hatters who say they can’t do it of bing unknowledgeable or not putting in the effort. Everyone else says that it can’t be done but you insist it can without having done it yourself or being able to tell me who has. I get that for your purposes, and those like you, the current Winchester felt might be ideal, but it’s not what I want. It’s not what a lot of us who have experienced quality vintage felt want. I’m not using a hat for the same purposes as you are and no one has yet shown me a finished hat made with current Winchester felt that meets my preferences. This is nothing personal and I don’t get why you act as though you have a stake in this. If you can point me to ANYONE who is able to make me a hat using modern Winchester felt that is the equivalent to 1930s Stetson Clear Beaver then I will publicly concede you were right and I was wrong. I’m not saying that Winchester western felt is bad, but I’m saying I’ve never seen or heard of anyone succeeding in making vintage equivalent hats from it.

Same old song. As I said, good luck to you in your quest. You can keep buying your hats. And I'll keep making my hats.

We obviously have a very real difference in experience when it comes to hats.

Merry Christmas to all!

Has anyone been in contact with Tatton Baird in Utah recently? I ordered (and paid for) a hat from them on April 16. I think he said it would be three months until I received the hat, but I'm not sure.

I have called and emailed them probably six times since I placed my order to confirm when I would receive the hat, and I have never heard back from them. It's like they are out of business. I have no idea how many times I have called them and they have not once answered the phone.

Has anyone made contact with them over the past few months? If so, when?

There is already a thread for Tatton Baird. Maybe a bartender can merge them.

I have not contacted him since December. He is known to be hard to get ahold of via email, but he’s answered my calls in the past.

…and it is a one-man shop and if he’s taken some vacation time….

It’s rare that my custom hats arrive really close to the quoted time. I figure after 50% above the quoted time and the hatter can’t complain that I’m asking for an update.

My brother was there in April. Don't know anything past that.

It’s a cool old building and he’s more than willing to take you into the basement where all the work takes place. Seemed like a nice guy, but I’m not sure that I see the value for the money. You should stop by if you’re ever pass that way. You’ll see it all in 15 minutes so your wife won’t get too bored.

I would be very curious to hear from someone who has been there since April. I ordered my hat at the beginning of Aprll and I ordered it on the phone. But he hasn't answered a phone or returned an email (or a vm) since. I don't even mind that he is behind schedule, but when you refuse all communication with customers (I only talked to him that one time when I ordered the hat) then there is reason to wonder what the hell is going on.

I'd be curious if anyone here could get through to him via phone or email. I had my assistant try and reach out to him but he didn't pick up the phone.

And it's not like we had a dispute or anything like that. I had a good conversation with him almost four months ago and I ordered what he told me was his most popular straw hat. I think he said there was a two-month lead time. Fine. And then he just...disappeared.
