So this is a post for fun.

This question is asked all the time -- how do I break this thing in.

Please understand the break-in process for Leather is different from Cotton Duck material.

Which is still different from waxed cotton.

I would not suggest (all) of this for a new horse or steerhide leather jacket, but some of it might be worth trying. Depends upon the results you want. Growing up on a farm, most of this has been done in one way or another to clothing I have owned. However, there are some new things here I need to try.

I make no guarantees about the success or failure you may experience if you try anything in this video...but its sure fun to watch at least: :)

wow nice post
That’s your fourth ‘wow nice post’ reply in just 2 days. And in each case they were in long defunct threads that were years old, one even dates from 2007.

I’m sure this must be pure coincidence otherwise someone might think you’re just trying to artificially boost your post count to the magic number of 20 in order to be able to sell in the Classifieds.

I do a bit of leatherwork and scrounge goodwill stores for cheap leather jackets that I cut up for material for my projects.

Generally the cheap leather jackets are a thin weight leather, much thinner then the quality jackets that we use for motorcycling, etc. They are also very stiff and rather uncomfortable to wear, and to make them soft and supple I have a process that works really well.

First off, I cut the jackets up into useable pieces for my projects.
Then I put the pieces outside in the garage during cold weather or in the freezer to make them cold.
When cold, I liberally apply a couple thick coats of neatsfoot oil.
Then I let them warm up indoors, the temperature change helps the leather soak up the neatsfoot oil.
Next step is to put them in the dryer with a old cotton sheet (to soak up the excess neatsfoot oil). I will select no heat, low heat, medium heat, or high heat based on previous experience, mostly mid or high heat. Include a old sneaker or two to rattle the dryer a bit more. Run in dryer until the leather is soft.

I would not recommend such an extreme procedure for an expensive leather jacket that would not break in, maybe tone it down a bit, a bit lighter on the neatsfoot, lower heat in the dryer, and less time.

Occasionally I come across a thicker leather jacket and this process works on the leather from that as well.

Regards,
Crankster
