The new Schott Shinki Horsehide P642H

Hi: first pot here. I bought this, and put up my review on Schott’s website.
This really is my grail jacket. I’ve had a dozen jackets in 30 years, several Schotts and others.
For me this jacket has the magical to fit properly with the liner in and a decent sweater, or with the liner out wearing a tshirt.
I’ve found Schotts’ cuts need tailoring for me because they tend to balloon out at the waist. I’m a 44 chest, and a 32 waist, and I can’t believe how perfectly this fits me.
I’ll put up a pic or two, sorry I’m no professional.

On another note, I have a well-worn 530 in xl. I had Arrow leather bring in the waist by 5 in. i will now never wear it again. Ebay or classifieds here?

I’m liking the liner more than I expected. I planned on making a wool zip in (and likely still will) but I was really comfortable today in ~22 degree weather with a cashmere turtleneck and the liner in. It really seems to compress down to just about nothing and get out of the way when needed.

It’s a large. A little weird because many times I e had to get an xl in Schott to fit my back and shoulders nut then it’s a tent in the waist. This is just perfect. I wish I had the know how to make a custom liner, but I agree on the green tartan. Its very good and the jacket is surprisingly warm. I was out in 13 degree weather for 1/2 hour right after I took the pictures, and wasn't cold.

definitely loving it. The collar is a bit different, a little unique. Kind of. Cross between a moto and those modern stand-up collars. It makes the jacket fit in dressed up or down. A little stiff in the horsehide, but i guess it will get comfortable after the break-in.

i can post some pictures when I make a liner. I’m not 100% convinced it will be an improvement, but a fun exercise regardless as I have not made one before.
Agreed on the back of the collar feeling a little stiff. If I could make one change to the pattern it would be to remove 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the top of the back just under the collar. On made to measure shirts that is a common modification for me so it shouldn’t be a surprise here. Sometimes it’s nice feeling the leather back there, sometimes it feels like it’s pushing forward a little harder than I would like and there is a little roll under the collar at times. I do think it will soften and break in as the shoulders mold to my shape a little more. But overall mobility is excellent (especially for a brand new jacket) so I’m really nitpicking here.

Me: 57 years old 6 ft. 175lbs 44 chest 32 waist athletic build. Owned 5-6 Schotts over the last 30 years, Been to the flagship store in NYC. Owned other brands of jackets including ones costing 4-5k, and custom.
The fit: I bought a large. It fits me personally better than any other Schott jacket. Like it was custom made. A lot of Schotts have room for a belly. This is a pretty trim and athletic cut. Sizing seems consistent with other Perfectos. I have an old 533 and this matches up. The only difference is that the Shinki may be slightly trimmer. Or, my 533 may have stretched, but basically identical sizing.
The liner: This is a very high end ribbed green tartan zip out liner. Zip out liners are often an afterthought, a gimmick, a bit of cheep fabric or fleece. This is not that. schott went all out. The color is awesome and matches the jacket and makes it pop without being showy. It is thin but substantial, and warm. It adds real versatility and usability and having it in or out doesnt change the drape or comfort. This particular liner is a huge feature of the jacket, that should be getting attention. I hope they do this more. This is the way it should be.
The cut, and style: The collar stands up a bit more than my 533, the hardware is there but it’s subtle unlike the 641 which has that dog collar look. You can dress this up a level or two and wear it to the office or out to dinner with a button down and slacks, and you are comfortably within corporate casual, or it works really well with jeans and a tshirt of course. Very versatile. Dress it up, dress it down.
The Leather: Shinki is special. Maybe you know that, maybe you don’t, but this is the good stuff. It’s horsehide. So it is relatively thin, lightweight, hard, tough as nails, shiny and stiff. Some horsehide looks plasticy and too shiny out of the gate. This looks burnished. It has depth. Shinki is known for this and unlike a lot of horsehide it looks amazing right away. I am going to have to earn the break-in and beauty that comes with age with this. I have had one other horsehide jacket and the reward for the initial stiffness is that it breaks in and molds to your body over time like no other leather, and Shinki is among if not the very best. My guess is that Schott knew that they had something special with this leather and they went all out and took some risk making a jacket above their current outstanding quality, with much better than their average (again outstanding) materials and techniques. They are going after the premium market, and to get into it they are offering an extreme amount of quality for value. If successful, with this, I am sure prices will be going up. This meets or exceeds the quality level of custom premium brands. Look out Himmel Bros.
Other thoughts: I’m not a review guy. I saw this one, and i thought i might like this, but probably not. I ordered it thinking there was probably a 75% chance I would return it, but I was truly blown away by every aspect of this jacket, if you are thinking about it, buy it now. Yes, it’s expensive, but I think this is Schott’s opening gambit into the luxury market. They absolutely killed it with this one. It’s going to be a success, and then the word will get out, it’ll be tough to get and the prices will skyrocket. Right now, you’re getting very high value for your buck.
Back in the 90s and 200s i drank Pappy Van Winkle because i thought it was very good and a decent value. I would just order a bottle every month or so. Then the word got out, and you cant get it at any price anymore. That’s an extreme example, but there is something similar going on here, I predict. Schott has always been the real deal, but they are taking it up a couple of notches with this one.
So yeah, I’m satisfied. If you buy it you’ll see i’m not exaggerating..”

Wrong model. This is the p642h
Apparently I agree that this jacket could be a bit shorter. I tend to carry my weight in my lower half and found the jacket riding up on my hips after some movement. On a whim I tried folding the bottom and found it more comfortable and like the jacket settled back in place easier.
So I hemmed the jacket and the back length is now just under 24” (about two inches shorter than original).
I have never sewn leather so it’s certainly not pro level stitching, but being black helps hide some of the learning curve. Realistically nobody looks that closely either. All in, I’m happy with it and find it more comfortable for my body shape at this length and the jeans I tend to wear.
So I hemmed the jacket and the back length is now just under 24” (about two inches shorter than original).
I have never sewn leather so it’s certainly not pro level stitching, but being black helps hide some of the learning curve. Realistically nobody looks that closely either. All in, I’m happy with it and find it more comfortable for my body shape at this length and the jeans I tend to wear.

Apparently this was a limited edition jacket. It’s a shame that it is no more in production after reading positive reviews about it.

Thanks for reaching out... I got desperate and ended up ordering a custom jacket from Johnson Leather. Still interested though… Do you have any more pictures?
So sorry man, I totally forgot to check back on the forum. I've some more photos here. Also listed on Ebay about ~$1300, but I can do $1100 plus shipping here. I'm located in Canada but I don't think there is any import tax if you are in the US, since the jacket was made in the US.
