My government job frowns on open carrying fixed blades, or carrying and knives for that matter, but I needed something to cut my apple at lunch today.
I have it's twin marked Frost Mora Laminated Steel Sweden with the identical sheath somewhere in my garage.

The top knife needs a little help

It was actually a Boy Scout issued knife

I can see how this knife would be good for doing more than a Swiss Army Knife could handle. It seems like it's capable of processing wood, cutting cord, dressing game, etc.

I am the wrong owner for this knife. I would never baton wood with a knife. I have a camp ax. I prefer a smaller gut hook and a skinning knife. I have a fillet knife for fish. I have a boning knife for butchering. And if I were to fight in a bar, I would want something else..... like a bar stool.


I'm just the temporary guardian of the knife, until it finds it's next owner. 60 years ago, all the cousins would have fought over it. Kids these days, are playing video games. I'm patiently awaiting the day when a niece or nephew presents as the next person in the family to need this exact heirloom. Until that happens, I will look at it every few years, put a drop of mineral oil on the blade, and a little lotion on the handle. With any luck, a 60 year old knife could last another 60 years.

I have a lunch box knife. Cuts food. Nothing fancy. Not fine cutlery. Just good enough for peeling and cutting fruit, cutting meat, etc.​

Every agency has a different idea of what you can have as a part of your equipment. This was what I carried in uniform. I had a supervisor who would roll his eyes, as he said, "imagine the headlines if you stabbed somebody".​

Nobody ever expects to go to work and have to stab somebody.

I have a whole drawer full of pocket knives, but over time Ive reached a point that I usually rotate one of these three for daily pocket carry. On is a refined little single blade damascas lockback, one is an older Schrade Uncle Henry Trapper, and the other is my Grandfathers 5 blade Case ( there IS a 5th pen blade behind one of the others).

They're really "dress" or "gentlemans" knives,because you never know when an aggressive apple needs dealing with during the day lol

Here is one of the knives that I really like. I like the full piece of metal design. I like the simple handles. I like the basic leather sheath. I really like the way it feels in my hand: grip, balance, heft. I put the knife in my jacket pocket. I've never carried it on my belt. It's not really a "city knife"; as in I won't be carving steak or stabbing anybody with it. It's more suitable for processing game. In The City, it makes quite the impression when I open an Amazon package. One of those knives that I own, but really haven't used. It's never actually been put to the task of field dressing a wild boar. It's never actually gone to camp, as I have other knives in my camp kit.​

It's a pocket knife if I carry it in my pocket.

The price was right. I couldn't resist. I bought 3 of them. One went into my lunch box. It saw regular use. It still does. One went into the kitchen. A small paring knife is always useful for prep work. The other one sort of sits around, opens mail, and I might even put it in my pocket for a bus ride.


Farberware is not fine cutlery. It's a discount brand, sold in discount stores. You are not getting great steel. You're not getting a sharp edge. Nor will it hold the bad edge that it came with.

For the price, I couldn't lose. A fixed blade. A sheath. A built in sharpener. What could go wrong?


The built in sharpener is poorly executed. It works at first. It won't last.

The sheath is perfect. It allows you to keep the knife in a drawer. Not so much to protect the poor quality blade. More to protect your hands as you reach into the drawer for something else. Good enough if you carry the knife in your pocket, in a bag, in a picnic basket, etc.


Right out of the box, the edge was okay. It worked. You will find yourself drawing it against the sharpener with use. The edge will dull quickly. I eventually found myself with an edge like a butter knife. The sharpener was simply worn through and worn out. I found myself manually sharpening the knife with sharpening tools I have around the house. I was never able to get it really sharp. And it never held an edge. I would sharpen it until it was good enough. I would use it until I notice that it wasn't sharp. I would sharpen it again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It's okay, as long as I don't mind sharpening it. Eventually, the knife that sees the most work, looks like I may as well throw it away. The blade is noticeably ground down.

To me, it was worth $2.85. I got my money's worth. But what did I really get? A disposable knife.

I will have to throw this away. I can't keep grinding off metal. Maybe I didn't get my money's worth after all. It's a piece of junk. $3 wasted. I wouldn't even be able to donate it. Not even the homeless would want this.

Would I be better off with an expensive paring knife? What is a good paring knife? Do I spend $100 - $200?


This is like buying boots. Do you spend $300 - $600 for something of reasonable quality? Or do you spend $100 - $200 for something that is okay until it fails?
