What’s the jacket Jason Momoa is wearing here? Fancy CHP?

Hey,
Anyone know what jacket Jason Momoa is wearing here?


It’s clearly not a straight CHP repro, but it kinda feels like a high-end or fashion-y interpretation of a California Highway Patrol (Cal Leathers-style) jacket.
The details are different, but it has that same overall design language — short body, boxy fit, wide lapels, that tough-but-tailored vibe.


Any clue what model or maker this might be?

To me this looks inspired by post war German riding jackets, not CHP.
I see no CHP here other than the fact it is a short cross zip...
It has the german style elbow pads, the the german style piping on the wrist zippers and a general german vibe to it.

If i had to take a guess i would say it's custom made in Japan and inspired by German design.
I'm only thinking custom made in Japan because Momoa has a history of wearing Japanese custom made jackets and he probably has the contacts to get what he wants custom made over there.


This one reminds me of it, note the wrist zipper piping which is similar as his jacket:

That would make perfect sens, and explain the german vibe.

This forum is honestly great — it's amazing to be able to ask something like this and get such a detailed, well-informed response. Really appreciate your take.

That's a really insightful perspective — I definitely see where you're coming from with the German influence, especially in the details like the elbow pads and wrist zipper piping. The Haelson example you linked does share a lot of that same energy.

That said, to my eye, what brings this jacket closer to a CHP aesthetic is more the overall silhouette and design language. The broad lapels in particular are something I’ve mostly seen on jackets from Cal Leathers — they're quite distinct and characteristic of that CHP look. It’s that combination of a short cross zip with exaggerated lapels that really leans it in that direction for me.

I agree though, it could very well be a Japanese custom piece — especially considering Momoa’s known connections in that scene

I don’t know the brand, but the lapel of that leather jacket is copied from a pea coat. It looks quite nice and better than a typical cross-zip lapel. Prob custom made to be single-breasted, too.

Plus, Y2 recently made a double breasted button-up jacket inspired by German cop-jackets of the 70s/80s. @Jaymig926 has one, and it looks great.

What could also be an indicator of Y2 is the short, boxy silhouette without any noticeable taper. That’s indicative of the HR55 pattern, and Momoa has one in saddle-horse, so maybe they did a one-off based on his measurements.

Yes, he is definitely one of us, whether he knows it or not. I remember a few years back he did an unboxing video when he got a new custom jacket (from Freewheelers maybe?) and he was just as giddy and pumped up opening that box as anybody here would be in that moment.

Was that the spirit grizzly, the white one, that's a TheShopVancouver one, he also has the 25th anniversary grizzly from Y2, cos when I got mine he was telling me about how Momoa just picked his up.

His Freewheelers one is a disaster unfortunately. They made him a custom one but their team clearly had no idea how to make a jacket for someone his size so it fits terribly.

I think that LW Leathertogs B / Buco J-31 pattern fits horribly in general. I haven’t seen one on a person that fits nicely.
