Thickness of Vanson Comp Weight and Shipping /Compared to Schott ?

Yesterday I received a Vanson Enfield size 40 in the mail from Vanson. My doorman handed me a box maybe 3 shoe boxes in size . It had weight to it but never fathomed it could have a leather jacket inside even then competition weight leather. I thought perhaps it was an Amazon supplies package. Nope, sure enough it was a leather jacket. Wow

I wasn't overly impressed with the weight of it either nor was is stiff compared to a Schott steer hide or horse hide. Luckily it was too big so I sent it back for a smaller size.

1. Was Vanson pulling my leg by sending me mid weight leather as comp weight ?

2. Do comp leather jackets usually ship in such a small box all folded ?

I know leather but my first Vanson buy. The Schott 689H came HEAVY and in a well packed flat garment box.

Any tips or things to look for ?

Thanks so much.

Have not ordered directly from Vanson, but many makers, including Schott ship their jackets folded once at the chest line (in a garment bag and sometimes with extra protection against moisture etc.).

I have handled Comp weight from different periods, and the newest one is indeed noticeable thinner and lighter than previous generations. It’s not “lightweight” though.

All Comp weight was pretty pliable from the start, so not the initial stiffness some leathers have.

Ok. Thanks.

AI/Google mentions some quality change perceived by some buyers but no definitive answer. A simple search would show this.

Just want to make sure that indeed Vanson Comp Weight leather would be able to fold so easily to fit in a box like that ?

This is useful to me ! Thanks

I went with Vanson because I felt the Schott 689 was too young looking and shiny HH leather. I am 56 wanted a more subtle looking leather jacket.

New and improved always means less these days unfortunately.

If the Enfield appeals to you as a design, but you dislike the leather, maybe an Aero Halfbelt or even a Highwayman may be the thing for you (Both Badalassi cow or CXL horse are pretty heavy).
Ordering via Thurston Brothers may take a bit out of the tarriff gamble.

Comp weight isn't what it used to be. Pre-2017 comp weight was thick and stiff and looked like vinyl when new but broke in beautifully and as it develops the grain pops out and it becomes full of character. I haven't ordered anything directly from Vanson, and the only Vanson I've owned from new was the Union Garage V7 collaboration, and it came in a box that I don't remember particularly well, but it was a large enough box that it wasn't crammed in.

Agreed. I got a comp weight from Vanson maybe 10 or 15 years ago, and it is all you say it is. Took a long time to break in, but then it was relatively soft, pliable and easy to wear, on and off the motorcycle. No doubt in my mind that it would give protection in a slide across the pavement.

Sometime back Vanson lost its supplier for that particular leather and has struggled to find a suitable replacement.

I just laid eyes on the collab our very own @Mrfrown did with Vanson, using an Enfield as a departure point. CXL Horsehide should do the trick for you. Maybe you can reach out to him.

thanks for the tag @Tom71 would have missed this

@Sonero hard to know what leather Vanson sent unless you ask them directly. There has been a lot of variation in their comp weight as others have mentioned. It’s also possible they sent a jacket in one of their lighter leathers by mistake

As to the box. Single jackets I’ve received from Vanson have all come folded over once across the midsection basically with the top of collar touching the bottom hem.

As Tom mentioned I have indeed just received the sample jacket for a design built off the Enfield.

We made a lot of changes: longer pointier collar, covered main zip, higher chest pocket, different cuffs, slightly shorter sleeves, reworked back with halfbelt and smaller side panels, deleted bulkier interior zipped pocket.

First offering will be in black Chromexcel horsehide but I’m planning a series of releases in different hides

Wearing it today and will be posting fit pics to the wjaywt thread but here’s one for immediate reference

^ You are that influencer all over Youtube. I have watched your vids congrats.

Nice looking jacket. I would buy it if I hadn't already purchased the Vanson.

I hope vanson has improved the zipper fraying at the insertion pin, it's the one thing that really bugs me .They are the only jackets I've owned I've had to reinforce with tape. The Enfield collab looks great with the new style collar.

This was my experience as well, but I haven't purchased new from Vanson in 10+ years. But, my new Model B was thick and stuff, but it wore in very nicely.

How do you all feel about a jacket with a western yoke like this ? I really like this model jacket from SD leather but I am undecided about the yoke on back.
Been to the store a few times and physically touched many of their USA jackets. All very heavy and good quality skins.

I've got a jacket from Fox Creek for on the motorcycle that has a back like that. I thought I'd hate it at first, but I ended up pulling the trigger on that model for practical purposes (integrated armor, vents, etc.). I have ended up really liking the jacket and even the back, even though that western style typically isn't my thing. I think it looks fine on the jacket you're looking at.

It's going for that Star Glove/ Cal Leathers CHP look. However, they've taken out some stuff from the front - like the badge holder, loops, connecting stitching between the handwarmers, epaulets. More of a minimal look which is fine.

I think the western yoke looks cool - doesn't bother me. Usually, these yokes are added to give some shape to the jacket.

The only thing that bothers me about the jacket you posted is that there's belt loops in the back, but none in the front. Make up your mind! lol
