Any thoughts, pro/con of Aero Goatskin. Any "squeaking" sounds with wear, soft/thick/smell..etc
It doesn’t squeak. It isn’t as thick as horsehide or steerhide and it will show folds but it will take a long time to show patina. Goat is, in some weird way, warmer to wear (although YMMV) and is highly abrasion resistant. It’s lighter than the other two hides I’ve mentioned but just as strong. It is flexible out of the box. There aren’t any downsides unless you want fast patination. It tends to be shiny and has a very distinctive grain. If you want an alternative, Vicenza horsehide is somewhat similar to goat. For a go-to jacket, it’s hard to beat goat and the lanolin in goatskin makes it very water-resistant. The top picture is Aero’s dark seal goat and the other one is SB’s black goat. Aero’s goat is slightly thicker and (I think) nicer. SB’s goat is lighter and more matte and seems to have less of a grain.

The bottom one is a modified Simmons Bilt Klondike, with straight-line cuffs, reinforcement triangles, contrast stitching and brown buttons. It resembles a Maxwell (slightly: the back and collar are totally different and the side adjusters face forward. The original pattern has different cuffs and a zipped chest pocket) but fits very differently (Maxwells are absolutely fantastic jackets and one of my favourite patterns) and I modified the Klondike a lot (see photos). Goat doesn’t smell, particularly - any odour would dissipate in a few days or a week. The Aero smells different to Horsehide/Steerhide, but it’s not bad. The Klondike didn’t smell at all.

Looks weird with only 3 buttons showing. SB probably cheapened out.

Don’t buy a Klondike, then. It’s a different style (I’ve not noticed any difference in quality). Either company does good goatskin, although if there were to be a scent to it, I’d say that my Aero is more goaty. No-one’s complained or chucked me out of my local, though.
