Review of Thedi Metropolis From Thurston Broa

I just received the Thedi Metropolis that I ordered from Thurston Bro. A car coat is the only popular style I did not have, so I decided to try a Thedi car coat and it really blew my mind. Since I am very happy with the purchase, I want to share a review of the jacket.

Leather: this one is 1.2 to 1.3 mm vegetable tanned horsehide. The leather feels substantial and supple at the same time. It is not as thick as my Rainbow Country pieces, but the character is completely different in a very good way. It is super grainy and somehow looks new and worn in at the same time. Thedi really does some magic with the finish. The only thing I prefer on Real Mccoy or Rainbow Country out of the box is the smell. The Metropolis has a slightly gamey scent that immediately reminds you this used to be part of an animal, while Shinki leather used by RMC and RC has a botanical, almost floral smell that probably comes from the plants used in their tanning process.

Construction and hardware: immaculate. I tried to be nitpicky and checked every stitch, looking for any issue, but could not find one. The stitching is incredibly clean and even. I do not think any maker can produce stitching better than this. The buttons feel solid, and he even included three extra buttons in case something happens.

Fit: this is the real magic. I have never imagined owning a jacket that fits perfectly over both a fitted tshirt and a thick Heimat sweater. Normally I need to make a trade off. If I want a jacket for fall and spring, I accept that it will be too tight over my favorite heavy wool sweater. If I want a jacket for winter, I accept that it will feel a little roomy over a tshirt. The Thedi Metropolis somehow fits both situations with no compromise. It looks great over a fitted tshirt and also over a thick sweater. It also looks great both buttoned and unbuttoned, which is another trade off I usually deal with on other jackets. I am genuinely curious how he figured out the measurements. For reference, I am a little over six feet and two hundred pounds, and this is a size L.

Here are some fit photos:

Legit concern. I will ask someone to take a photo of my back while it is buttoned up haha

I’ve never been a big fan of car coats but this looks amazing! Perfect fit on you too. Funny that you note the smell also. My Thedi in Buffalo leather had a similar smell and I was not a fan. I tried airing it out but no dice! I ended up fiddling around with ozone and then coffee grinds and the smell is about 80% gone and more of a leathery leather smell lol. i haven’t seen it mentioned by anyone else so I just assumed I’m the weird 1% that wasn’t a fan.

I have the exact same car coat in deerskin and to be honest I had the same issue with the smell, especially in the beginning my wardrobe was not smelling 'fresh' to put it that way.

The smell is not so horrible that I have to find a way to get rid of it (although my whole room is smelling like that lol). But it’s not a pleasant smell. Whenever I opened a new Shinki jacket, the smell was so botanical that I wanted to keep smelling it haha.

A pic from the back.

Does anybody here have experience with the smell of bruciato horsehide from Thedi? Recently ordered a jacket with that leather and I am now slightly concerned over the smell haha

And do you have experience handling shinki? Also wondering how the bruciato horsehide compares
I own examples of both. I can’t wrap my head around why shinki is so popular, but to each their own. I think a lot of it comes from really good marketing. The Thedi horse I own is phenomenal and has tons of character, it’s both thick/robust but supple due to how it’s treated.

Updates on the break in or the smell?
The smell is not as strong as when I received it, if I put my nose right next to it, I can still smell it but my room is not smelling like that anymore. As for the break in, I will let the photos say, they break in beautifully!

I would not say that the smell is bad, it just does not smell as botanically as Shinki’s. But again, this has a more “authentic” leather smell.

Agreed. Having owned a lot of Shinkis, I now much prefer the texture of my Thedi. However, I kinda disagree with the opinion that the smell is their selling point haha, it smells gamey and any Shinki I have has a pleasant smell of mimosa.

some people can't handle the taste of cilantro while others love it. You just have a genetic mutation or variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes.

Nice one, As for the smell, it reminds me of the first leather jacket I ever bought, a cheap one that smelled like tar. I even had to leave it on the balcony for a whole week to get rid of the smell before I dared wear it haha
