A skate case, 15 x 11 x 5.5

The seller didn’t know what it was. These things were very common among my people in my early years. Mom & Pop’s Rolling Skating Rink (yes, that’s what it was called) was the Friday night place to be when my mom was a teenager. (She met both of her husbands there.) The rink was still going strong when I was a little kid. I hear from the few surviving friends and relatives still living around there that it had about run its course not long after we moved away.

I freely admit to a weakness for old luggage in general and skate cases in particular. This one came my way today, along with a pair of size 4 women’s skates (wooden wheels; pretty cool). I’m diggin’ the vintage decals. I’m guessing it all dates from the 1950s. Perhaps our Michigander friends have some recollection of those rinks.
EDIT: Roll Arena still exists in Midland, Michigan. I don’t know if it occupies the same structure it did when these decals were new.
It seems that the Lake Rollerrink in Lake, Michigan exists only in memory.

When I was quite young our little town had an “open air” roller rink. The hardwood floors were enclosed by a slatted wall that only came up to about waist high. From there it was open air up to the roof with only drop down canvas sides for inclement weather. With a couple of overhead heaters it stayed open for business about 10 months out of the yr. I was taken there a couple of times by my dad’s youngest sisters. They were quite good at skating.

There’s a roller rink a couple miles from here. A lifelong local of my acquaintance, a woman nearly my age, tells me she took her kids there when they were little.

I mentioned earlier that my mom met both her husbands (she was widowed shortly after I was born) at Mom and Pop’s roller rink in Madison, which was still a going concern in my early years. It’s long gone now.

(I found a spot for those size 4 woman’s skates.)

I happened to arrive at the Restore Habitat for Humanity dock in Brevard, NC as a lady was unloading 4 of these chairs. I asked the dock guy if he'd sell me two, and I got a pair for $5 each!. BUT, the wife has me on a short leash and I could only bring them home if I promised to sell them in Nashville. No problem.... gone on Marketplace the next morning at a very nice profit. The Gen Z that bought them is decorating her room as a tree ??? The remaining two were listed at $165 ea, and gone in a week. (somebody erred in selling them to me). Now I'm on the lookout for more twig furniture.

A little background ... this is a pair of vintage Amish oak slat seat, twig rockers. These are Appalachian-style bentwood rocking chairs from Brevard, North Carolina. They are known as hickory twig rocking chairs. and typically constructed from hickory and oak, with the hickory saplings being steamed and hand-bent to create the unique shapes. They used copper nails to piece it together. They''re very comfortable, sturdy and have a great weathered patina.

Love ‘em! We’ve had this hickory and walnut one for over 40 years. From the Amish up near Urbana, Missouri.

You wouldn't think they'd be comfortable, but I was really surprised. The weathered patina showed the age and appealed to the "country" folk in Nashville. I had 4 queries by noon the day after I listed them. I should have taken them all..... I just knew they'd connect with folks in my area. Yours are in great shape - heirloom quality!

In keeping with my new found interest in Appalachian folk twig furniture, I picked up this small table about a week ago. Very sturdy and represented on several on-line antique/auction sites. The inverted horseshoe is a distinctive feature. It looks to have been painted brown and was in rugged shape. Still, it was sturdy and nothing was falling off.

I found it in a North Carolina antique store with other "rough" unsellable items, e.g. very cheap. As with the chairs I mentioned previously, I listed it on market place in Nashville and it was gone in 24 hours. These are now on my radar even in poor looking shape. I love Gen Z'ers. All great fun
