My apologies. It was not my intention to paint you in a negative light by implying you are prejudiced against "pensioned Brit Panama hat wearers." I agree with your correction, that you would like to avoid the association with their "style."
If you will overlook that gaffe, allow me to say...
The Only Metric that Matters: Value
Huertecilla, there is no magic metric you will find to quantify the qualitative. The only metric is value: specifically, how much are you willing to pay for a hat.
For example, your value of straw hats is next to nothing. Graham Thompson (bespoke hatter)...
1960s Knox Comet 4 Custom Edge
Posting my early-60s Knox Comet 4 here for reference.
The general consensus is that the name refers to the DeHaviland Comet 4 in use by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). This appears to be Knox's entry into the "Jet Set" hats (e.g., Dobbs 707...
I have an early 1960s Knox that has a price of $17.95 and is called a Knox Custom. Not sure if that answers your question, but it at least gives you a data point.

Thought I would add to the collection of photos. This stamp comes from an early '60s Knox Comet 4 (Knox Custom):
The mark is very similar to the L.C.B. mark on the late-'50s Dobbs 30 shown below.
I've done my homework, and for those who are interested in more info on the hat cutter's union stamp on the inside of my sweatband, here's the link: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?56060-SWEATBAND-MANUFACTURE-STAMPS-THREAD-(Not-hat-manufactures)
I have to agree. I feel like an amateur archaeologist stumbling onto a find of a lifetime. When I first asked how old my hat might be, I would have been satisfied with "early 1960s;" instead I received the reasoning for why that date is accurate. Plus a little about the jetliners of the British...
Hi, everyone! I just joined a couple of weeks ago. I'd been looking at vintage fedoras on eBay, and found a lot of my google searches pointed here. But the story starts a little before that...
I visited Optimo Hats downtown Chicago around Christmastime and fell in love with hats. When I asked...
Thanks, Richard! I'm gleaning from your comment that Knox belonged to a company named HatCo. What other brands does that include?
Here's some pictures of the labels on the inside of the sweatband on the Comet 4:
The size tag fell off when I turned the sweatband out :(
There's an...
Thanks, Alan. I suspected about that vintage, judging by looking at some of the Knox hats posted on this site. Specifically, the lack of the Knox crest on the band and the Knox Custom .
I'm curious: When did Knox start putting their name on the band in place of the crest? Also, when did they...
