If it was in fact a cost cutting measure it really doesn't matter when it started. Hell, now they're trying to sell, and are I guess, Buffalo fur felt.
Stetson and any other company is in business to make a profit. I suspect that nutria came into production of hats in an attempt to cut cost from beaver fur. It obviously didn't work because a nutria hat is fairly rare.
If I would ever reach a point where I had so much money I didn't really know how much I had, [most of you know what I mean] I would probably have some Optimo hats. At that point it wouldn't matter if they are worth the squeeze!!!!
