Don,
I have several new/modern ORs in both 6X and Royal Deluxe and can confirm all your frustrations. Buying these hats online is always filled with anxiety and hope they will fit just right. The fit between the two models is also different.
I also own two CDs in 59–one I just received this...
I, too, just bought the same hat, in 7 1/4. I love the Cornhill color. Looks even better in person. Only issue is I’m a 7 3/8 99% of the time, so sadly, I might have to let this one go.
Hello, all.
I just received the new limited edition Stratoliner and I absolutely love it. This is the Camel color, and what I would describe as light grizzly felt. Really like the texture, as I’ve never seen a Strat with this texture. Fell in love with it when Stetson announced its release...

The dimensions are...
I have many newer/modern Open Roads and Stratoliners in both felt and straw. They are “generally” true to size, but are pretty inconsistent in my experience. These are mass produced hats and not always perfect. The 6X OR fits a bit more snug than the Royal Deluxe on my head. The straw OR fits me...

Left to right: Resistol Ridgetop in crystal, cut brim to 2 3/4”, flanged, front mule kick. Akubra Campdraft in Bluegrass Green, Stetson Royal Deluxe in Natural.
Here are my two cents. In this conversation, there really needs to be a distinction between the modern OR versus the older ORs. They are VERY different hats. I own many modern ORs, both in Royal Deluxe and 6X. I also have an Akubra Campdraft with a cattleman crease. I’m nowhere near being a hat...
