    Paul's Hat Works

I purchased a couple of panamas from Paul's about ten years ago. They were Cuencas in the several hundred dollar range and are nice hats. But I've learned since then that I can get Montecristis of considerably better quality for the same price. For those that reside in the SF Bay Area, check...

    Vintage "women's" hat?

The hat is lovely and so is the woman under it. My compliments. I think the hat definitely has a 40s look to it, though I'm no authority on the subject of women's hats.

    Airport Security

And I'm sorry about the indignity you had to endure too. That's the real issue.

    Airport Security

When all the post-911 security measures were first implemented, they simply took the forbidden item and tossed it with a grin (as if it were funny). I lost a very expensive manicure set that my wife had given me that way. Not that business travel was ever fun, but it sure has became grim at...

    August Is Twelve Weeks Long

It's just shy of 100F and 55% RH here in San Jose, CA. I realize that's cool to the folks in the Southeast. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to Fall. I'm looking forward to wearing my suits with vests. Steve

    Airport Security

Nashoba, it's the "making you feel like a criminal" part that is especially galling. In my rush to catch a flight recently in Austin I forgot to take a water bottle out of my brief case. I got quite a lecture about that. I'm over 50 and not a child. A polite reminder of the rules would have...

    Airport Security

I'm a newbie around here and I've got a question for the gents who wear braces. Do the small buckles on braces create any problems going through security? I'm an experienced traveler and go through the usual motions without thinking about it , i.e. I pull out my laptop, and take off my...

    Best Hat store in Chicago?

Steven, I couldn't agree with you more. As a technical sales support engineer in the semiconductor business, suit and tie are a bit over the top to some, and my hats I know make me eccentric to most, but I'm having fun with it. I added braces to the mix early this year. For some reason the...

    Californians Please check in!

J, tell me more about where to have custom clothing made in the East Bay. My tall aspect ratio dictates custom shirts, slacks and suits if I want a good fit. I used to be able have this done in San Jose, but the tailors I once used moved to SF or went out of business. If you know a good local...

    Californians Please check in!

I should add that I've lived in a few places. Born in Wilmington, DE, raised in Fresno, CA, and went to school in Davis, CA (where Sacramento was the happening place).

J, my apologies. Fremont is a fine place to live. We do most of our daily living there, and we like it a lot. Quite, relatively safe, etc., but if you gotta have a fine art museum or have some custom shirts made, San Francisco is the only place to be in the SF Bay Area. Thin Man

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

I'm 6'3" and thin, hence the handle, though in real life I go by Stephen Clark. I'm an electrical engineer in the semiconductor industry working in San Jose, CA. I've always enjoyed dressing well and I'm positively nuts about hats. These days I wear a grey Optimo panama to work during the...

    Best Hat store in Chicago?

Thank you for the welcome, Art. The wife and I do plan to visit Chicago and look up Optimo. The Windy City is one of few great American cities that we have not visited. We'll have to do all the usual touristy stuff, of course, but the wife has already been forwarnd that a visit to Optimo is...

    Cuff Link dilemma

I definitely agree with the other commentors. Another solution to your problem is to use "chain" cufflinks in which there are two decorative "buttons" connected by a small chain. That way the viewer as well as the wearer may admire the design.

The wife and I live in Fremont, California (which is frankly dead when it comes to culture). We head to San Francisco to strut ourselves in our vintage style.
