I also agree with reccomendation of l'oreal Superior preference range, it by far outlasts all the other commercial DIY hair dyes. the conditioner that comes with it is nice and thick and coats hair to minimise color fade.
Anything in the Schwarzkopf range - I'm not a fan, not as good...
best brush is one with natural bristles and long nylon pins!
I find a lot of cheap modern combs give you this stringy look(yes the picture is a little exaggerated), as the comb's teeth tend to separates the hair, which is not very vintage.
