It's a small world. I've been reading FL off and on for a month or so and have been planning to join in the conversations. To prepare to write this note, I read through the recent Stratoliner thread and was intrigued to find the seller, buyer and second bidder all members. Small world indeed!!

About a month ago, I decided to have a hat made for me by Jim Whittington here in Salt Lake City. Re the small world, one of my first vintage hat purchases was from Art, and FL member I believe, when he was in northern California. (A Borsolino he had restored and still one of my favorites.) One day, I was talking to Art and mentioned Jim and found out they knew each other. Today, Jim said to send his regards to Art when I posted this note. Consider that done: Jim says, "Hi, Art."

Here's a picture of Jim.

The hat he's holding is a my new Cavanaugh he cleaned for me. It could be a topic for another thread. This afternoon he began making my new hat and I took photos of his shop, tools, and the work process. If this sort of "photo documentary" hasn't been shown too much before, I'd be pleased and happy to show the whole process in a series of photos. Most of his equipment is vintage. He and I figured it will take two more visits to see the sequence to the end. That would probably be next Friday and the Friday after that.

If this sounds interesting, I'll post the rest of the sequence for stage one tomorrow or the next day. (Of course, that assumes this one posts the way I hope.)

Regards,
Mark Alan

Hi Mark, and Welcome to the Lounge from Cache Valley. Nice to see someone else in Utah! I stopped in to see Jim last year to talk hats, and was impressed at his shop.

Looking forward to seeing your new hat, but meanwhile, please share with us about your Cavanagh!

Hello Mark, and welcome to the Lounge! Posting pictures is always encouraged. There's a bit of debate about other stuff, lately, but the Lounge, like any large (3,000+ members) family, can differ and yet sit at the same table.

Welcome to the Lounge!

The Cavanagh in the photo is NICE! I like the color combination of the hat and band. Just wonderful.

Please post whatever photos you have taken. We would all appreciate seeing the processes and tools involved in the hat making business.

A hundred thousand welcomes!

Congradulations on finding the Lounge and bringing your information to us. The Loungers sure seem to like hearing about new acquisitions and the work being done by the hat makers. Tell us your tales of hats and we will listen with bated breath!

Sincerely,
