Help With a Quote

Hi All,

I have been banging my head against a wall for about three weeks. This is why: About five years ago, a friend of mine gave me a quote when we were discussing what it means to be a gentleman. The quote was so awesome that I wrote it down in an email and emailed it to myself. From there it went to a Word document and I have transferred that Word document to every computer I have owned since then.

The quote sounds vintage, but I have not been able to find it in any books at home, at the office, or in the local library. I tried to google the quote, but all the result returned were unrelated. Most of the results had to do with hog hunting, feral hogs, or any thing else hog related. Without further ado, here is the quote:

"The purpose of the gentleman is to raise human life above the hog-wallow that is animal existence, to make society more harmonious by exhibiting good manners and good etiquette, dressing agreeably, being well spoken and articulate, having respect for one's fellow citizens, showing generosity to those weaker or inferior to yourself, and, above all, showing unflinching devotion to moral principles. All of these habits, including etiquette and the habit of dressing respectably make society operate more smoothly, mitigate social tension, and make human life more harmonious and therefore akin to a work of art."-- my friend Andre

I can't figure out if this quote is from a movie, book, play, poem, some War Between the States general, an early president, Cesar, or from the Bible, Quran, Tibetan Book of the Dead, or if someone just pulled it out of nowhere off the top of their head.

Thanks!

Hi guys, I just thought I would bump this up. Even if it is just a guess, that would be great. Did my buddy Andre actually make it up? I'm beginning to think so. I lost track of him after he went to study engineering at some school in Wisconsin.
