An hour-long drive out into the farmlands last weekend hooked me up with a nice lady disposing of some family estate goods. I came away with a New West Bailey, and so far I have no clue as to a model name. It’s a handsome hat, with nothing on the band but New West from Bailey, and the name of some long-gone store in Wyoming. The stock braided-leather hatband was nice enough, except it fastened together with the most hideous yellow-metal "bra-clasp" imaginable. A 7/8” horsehair was ordered and has taken its place. A very pretty drive resulting in the acquisition of a nice, if unspectacular, vintage western.

A few weeks ago I received an RM Williams (Akubra) "Thoroughbred"(not the new one) which I posted earlier in the thread...... While I like it, it needed a good horsehair band (which I added), but I was still unsure. Looked to disproportional and tapered.
THEN I decided to entirely re-block the hat on a 51 block. I did like it open crown.....but I like it even more now with a simple center crease. So it will stay like this for a while.........
What are we if we don't keep "tweaking" our hats......

What style of hat is this?
Would you call it a Flat Top Bowler (I.e. Cambridge Bowler) or a Top Hat? What do you think?
Here are the specifics:
Maker: TP&H Trading Co. (Dobbs box just for display)
Style: Flat top, sides curved up, with pencil curl brim
Dimensions: 5 ¼” crown with a 3” brim
Hat Band: Black, 9 ligne, grosgrain crown ribbon with 5” bow
Lining: Heavy weight cotton
Sweatband: 2 ½ " black enameled leather, stitched at 8 to the inch
Felt: 100% beaver felt

Some of those who gravitate toward the Old Tyme hats might have a model or style name. It doesn't really fit the pattern typical of Cambridge bowlers or top hats. It might be something akin to a Coach hat (a short top hat), but, IMO, that's also a stretch.

I like it. The simple center crease is one of my favorite styles.

Thanks but it’s all the work of an app converting a pic.
The hat is an Akubra Territory I made to look like a planters hat. David Carradine wore something similar in the movie but his was a BE brim turned down. A few yrs ago a planters hat owned by a CSA General & worn thru the war came up for auction. It ultimately ended up being won by a museum. I sort of modeled mine somewhat like it.

It was collecting Air Miles!Early 80s Stetson Winner, in camel color. A little banged up in shipping, so all I've done so far is get things un-bent. I'm thinking maybe a little more downturn to the brim, but not certain yet. This little guy had an adventure getting to me. From a local P.O. in North Dakota, to Fargo. Then just "in transit" for 6 days, until it appeared in Portland. Say, wha'? Then disappeared again for 9 more days before arriving in Denver. Lingered there for two days, then "in transit" again. Finally landed on my doorstep 19 days after USPS took possession of it.

The crown is a little too tall & the brim a little too wide to be an accurate clone of a Coachman or a John Bull Top Hat.

I have a block similar to this and am making a hat similar just to try it out. My crown is not that tall but the profile is much the same. This picture has given me inspiration for the brim treatment.

Yep. I sometimes wonder if a hat maker back in the day made a flat top block hoping to make a poor man's top hat from a wide brim western.
