What hat are you waiting for today?

When they say ‘unshapeble’ surely that’s not literal? It’s a felt hat, presumably with stiffener added. I’ve heard that the modern RD OR is still a fairly soft dress felt machine pressed into a cattleman crease, and so theoretically at least should be reshapable once the stiffener has loosened up a bit or washed out?

Two things complicate shaping a modern OR.

Not only are they stiff and pressed in, making them difficult to open up w/o ghost creases, but they're more tapered than vintage. This makes them amenable to the factory look, but not conducive to other creases.

And in addition to these factors I also find that it’s not really possible to give the modern open roads and stratoliners the kind of brim curl that I like. You can wear them brim “up” or “down” but that’s about it. Any attempts to steam or spray the felt and give any type of brim curl usually ends up with that sort of rippled bacon effect

Thanks, that makes sense. I’ll cross them off my Christmas list in that case.

Out of interest, if I were looking for something with the same sort of dimensions as my 1950’s RD OR, but a little newer and less of a worry (I.e. more replaceable if it gets lost or damaged), what sort of age would I be looking at?

Either a custom or another 50s OR or OR clone. Maybe someone else can weigh in, but I'm not much into modern mass produced hats.

I have a few 150th Anniversary Stetsons, when they tried to reintroduce some decent quality open crown hats, but I'd much rather have vintage.

I had a couple 150th anniversary Strats & while the felt was OK the crown height was just too low to do much with.
The only easily available open crown strats over here in Japan have an 8cm brim, which is too wide for my tastes.
I may just keep my eyes on the second hand market as old ORs seem to come up fairly regularly and 7cm is about as wide as I want to go

Nothing especially exotic, but this hemp Stratoliner:

Came my way on a good deal on ebay. These aren't easy to find over here. Stetson EU don't make them and they aren't directly distributed here; when one does find a US seller who will ship to the UK, postage can be prohibitive. I recently tried to order a black, Milan Stratoliner, only to find the seller on Amazon dot com's marketplace wanted almost a hundred GBP to ship to the UK (£70 is pretty normal these days for everything). This one is my regular size; I have one of the hemp models in Olive already and my regular size works well. My grey Milan version requires a little padding still in the band as those seem to run slightly large.

Also waiting for this to arrive:

A Biltmore President in black Lucca Hemp. It came in very significantly cheaper than a Stratoliner and might just scratch the black-straw itch I've had for some time. A brown ribbon on lack wouldn't have been my choice, but if it bothers me once it's in hand I can always switch it out for somthing like a grey puggaree.

This really needs to be me done on the straw front at least for this year... though if Hats Direct add a hemp straw Federation in dark brown to their Wentworth Hat Co line, all bets are off!

When I return to Florida, hopefully this Morreton "Touring" model from mid-century will be waiting for me. The retailer, Rafal, was located in the 20th arrondissement and would have been one of many small family owned hat and clothing sellers on the street, many of whom were Jewish. The location listed is now a Turkish restaurant and had been since 1987.

It was on eBay priced pretty high, but I got it knocked down enough to convince myself to buy it.

Curious what they took for it. You don't have to share if you don't want to though, of course. They sent an offer of $1275 which was still way too much in my estimation, but also I guess hats like that don't show up very often so I'm sure they do command a premium. Can't wait to hear about it when it's in your hands!

I got him down below that $1275 price, but it still cost a chunk. If it wasn't a velour or longhair, I wouldn't have bought it, since I already have so many hats.
