I tried to search for this topic, but couldn't find it in the forums.

What is the appropriate way to clean wild bird feathers for millinary use?

I googled this question, and found some answers. But the discussion board results were so rude to the person who asked the quesiton that I wasn't satisfied with the answers presented.

Here are the answers given:

  • Microwave them
  • Freeze them
  • Various boiling, chemical techniques

I am mostly concerned with cleaning germs, bugs, etc off the feathers.

Thank you,

Vintage Betty

What is barbicide and how do I use it please?

I believe barbicide is the stuff hairdressers drop all their scissors and combs into in between uses. You may have seen jars of a blue liquid on their counters.

At least, over here those jars often have "barbicide" written down the side. So your hairdresser might know where to get it, and how it is used.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Just googled it, and I was right!. :D

Hey Betty - My sister likes magpies, and if I ever had a hat that was suitable, I'd like to put a little magpie arrangement in it.

I know not a huge number of the guys in here put feathers in their hats, but it would be interesting to see how you get on with the process.

If you do try preparing feathers, it would be great if you could document the process with a few photos, any snags you meet along the way, and how you solved them.

Good luck. ;)

Mr. Fatwoul-

It would be my pleasure, as long as you aren't in a hurry.

I have plenty of single feathers to play with. Would it be acceptable to you for me to do a comparison of cleansing techniques using single feathers?

Or are you interested in using these feathers after cleansing to create an arrangement on a woman's hat? Specifics would help me to help you.
