Betty kinds of scares me and I keep waiting for her to snap. For some reason whenever she has a scene I feel like I'm watching something so private it makes me uncomfortable but I can't turn away.

Whew - Don sure stepped in to Pig land this past episode. I feel titillated and angry to be watching him all at the same time. His new mistress should have smacked the **** out of him. You could write a book about his feelings of inadequacy and the consequent acting out. It's a good thing he's pretty - I think he's given leeway (certainly by me) because he's sooo very pretty and charismatic. Best character on TV - I'm saying it.

I don't know, I'm a pretty hard core Lost and Battlestar Galactica fan. D'oh! I forgot about Linus on Lost. OK, he can share Best Character honors with Don Draper.

I don't know if you can call someone who "dances with the washing machine" (if you know what I mean) completely frigid.

However, as far as repressed housewives go, I certainly find Janet on CBS's Swingtown far more endearing and likable than Betty Draper. But I will say that Betty has a certain poise about her that I like.

Oh, I'm a HUGE LOST fan (see my "Nerd Alert" threads),but until it comes back lord knows when (January?), Mad Men is IT!

I really loved the last episode, it was the best one yet. Everything around Don Draper just suddenly got very intense and ugly - yet at the same time so incredibly handsome.

I was amused by the comment "Are you two sold separately?", about Betty and Don because they really do look just like Ken and Barbie. Selentino, I can really realte to what you are saying about Betty, man it's eerie. I'm beginning to feel the same way about Don. I think it was just such an intense and private scene when he threatened Bobbi Barrett in the hall of the restaurant, in order to get her to make Johnny apologize.

The choice of song for the closing scene was just perfect.

I can't remember who it was that called Betty "profoundly sad" earlier as well? It happened again in this episode.

Betty's a little scary...but gotta love her. The neighbor with the pigeons threatens to shoot her daughter's dog if given the chance, so Betty storms out there with a cigarette dangling from her lips with a shotgun blasting each of the neighbor's pigeons as they take flight last season. It was sad and scary, but yet, I laughed at the absurdity of the whole situation.

I love the details.
Like referring to purses as 'pocketbooks'.
Or when Harry runs to the art dept to find a replacemnt envelope and Salvatore is at the drafting table using an 'electric eraser.'
Hadnt seen one of those since the years before the macintosh made drafting tables & erasers obsolete.

They're both still out there (drafting tables and electric erasers) and easily available. A friend in theatre has the latter and there's always a big clamor to borrow it after the final performance of a show to erase notes & cuts from scripts & scores - you don't get your check until the books are erased. And the theatrical libraries charge a mint (like $50 per book) if they find anything unerased.

Nice to know theyre still out there, but Im getting at the environment of the 60s office Art Dept. With photoshop, you jsut dont see that sort of thing anymore. Artists work on the computer & then make a printout.

Like there were once lots of airbrushes used in publishing to retouch photos. Now its done in photoshop. So no more mess in the Art Dept. No smocks.
But you still see airbrushes used for actual paintjobs on cars. Even adverts for airbrushes for applying make-up. But in an art dept...not so much.

I just love the attitude towards the art dept: 'can you MAKE me an envelope?'

I miss retouched photos. I think that's high art, I save them whenever I can.

Any comments on the 8/24 episode ("The New Girl")?

After a slow ramp-up this season, I really thought they were suddenly firing on all cylinders with this one. It was loaded with surprises, but they all made perfect sense when revealed. (E.g., of course, Peggy and Don have a deeper understanding that we didn't know about!) And the great moments kept on coming: Rachel's unexpected reappearance, Mozart on a zipper, Joan and Jane, Joan and Roger, Peggy and Bobbie, Betty when Don stumbled in at dawn, Jimmy Barrett's unexpected humility... But Pete got the best line during his "donnybrook" with his wife:

"I just did a very private thing in a very public place for you!"

An outstanding episode of an amazing series.

OT:Is it just me, or is the audio very poor on this show. I find myself asking "What did he say??" several times an episode.

I thought it was funny when Pete was looking through the stack of magazines and there was a "U.S. News and World Report". Must get some Wall Street types at that doctor lol

Also, at the end when Don's daughter asked why he couldn't have salt and Betty said something like "We want to keep daddy around for a long time," did anyone else get the impression that is probably NOT what is going to happen? That in some way daddy, or mommy will not be around before long?

As I think I said a few pages earlier, I believe that Betty will be the one to liberate herself and leave - once the full explosion of THE SIXTIES begins in a couple of more seasons.

The Don and Peggy scene was a shocker!
My husband just started watching the show with me this season. He has been unsure about it for a few weeks. But the Mozart scene had him laughing. Also the "jar full of pennies" comment about the second year of marriage.
