Just something a bit random... anyone here partake in the sport of Archery?

I used to run Ranges at various scout camps... though never took to it as a hobby.

Same here. I did it as a scout, got the merit badge and all but haven't done it since. I think it is a really fun sport but just haven't had the time or money to invest in it.

I did some archery in school.
Have seen the bonus film on the two disk set of The Adventures of Robin Hood? There is a great short film of a trick shot archer.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

Ah one of my favorite sports, I got almost to junior olimpic level in camp, but the session eneded. I also make my own bows and arrows as a hobby. I haved loved Robin Hood since I was 3 or 4 thanks to my dad and grandpa. My dad and I made my first bow when 4 years old. I have made 2 very good ones by hand, but one broke when I was restinging it and the other is to fragile to shoot. I am starting three more right now out of wood from hurricanes. Have you guys heard of Harold Hill he is the archery master of the Golden Era films, he could shoot plates in mid-air and split arrows, Robin Hood style. Man, ok so I am leaving now, before I start scaring you all. ;)

As a kid, a number of my friends and I had bows and arrows. We "shot up" anything that moved, and had great fun. I would suspect if our bow and arrow armed roving band tried that today (as opposed to the early 1960's) we'd all be labeled as "troubled youth" and our parents would be investigated by Social Services. My, my, my - how times have changed!

One of the few things my dad and I ever do together on a regular basis. He's a hunter (I'm not), but we can always go to the range together.

Regarding vintage archery photo:

1. Believe this to be promo photo associated with film
"The Adventures of Robinhood".

2. Archer dressed as Robin is probably famous trick
archery shooter Howard Hill.

3. Gentleman in center holding arrow believe is actor
Basil Rathbone.

I love archery...

...as a sport, but haven't done any hunting -- which makes me a bit of an oddity in the sporting South. I did a lot in college, including setting up an intramural competition, but even then most of my competitors were good ol' boys waiting for deer season to start.

I learned from my father, who was on the Purdue University archery team in the early 60s. He was cold-blooded with that thing. He wasn't really a trick archer, but several times he would attach a ping-pong ball to a two-foot bit of string, have one of us kids set it swinging in front of a target (then step safely aside) and would pierce the ball as it swung in front of the target -- hitting both the ball and the bull dead center from about 60-80 feet. I also saw him shoot an arrow straight up into the air so far I couldn't see it anymore, and catch it when it came back down past him. Is that a useful trick? No. But it's pretty darn impressive to a passel of kids.

Now I shoot in the backyard, against hay bales, with an old Bear recurve bow. It's relaxing and doesn't create the disturbance and potential furor that my firearms would.

In today's society, it's almost socially unacceptable to be an archer. When I was in college (just a decade ago) I was actually stopped by campus security while crossing campus carrying my bow to the archery range for a class. The university offered archery instruction, but apparently nobody bothered telling the cops. They confiscated my bow and quiver and didn't return it for two weeks -- during which time I had to use the POS fiberglass bows the school provided.

One of my favourite sports. I've shot since I was young. My father and I spent hours crafting bows and arrows. I still make bows from Bois d'arc and footed arrows. One elderly gentleman in my home town was a good friend of both Fred Bear and Howard Hill. He could outshoot them both!

Ive done a little bow hunting (for deer) in the past. Not really a fan though. I found myself to be more accurate with a wood recurve than with a fancy schmancy compound bow (I missed a 6 point buck completly with one :rage: )

My cousin is insane though. Ive seen him hit a squirel on a tree with a recurve.

I used to shoot regularly. Haven't touched my bow in about 3 monthes. Then again, it's cold as hell outside and now I'm too tall to shoot in the basement. Spring's right around the corner, though.

Archery is one of my favorite pastimes. I am starting to participate in the Targe Triathalons at Highland Games. The Scottish warrior sports are starting to make a comeback at the games. In the triathalon, you have to be able to use a Claymore (2 handed, not basket hilt), archery, and a weapon to be named later. Most times it is a battle axe and you throw at the targets. We also compete with the single stick (cudgels) which is comparable to the basket hilted broadsword or backsword. It is alot of fun and you have to compete in kilt. We mainly wear the great kilt. You have to lay down to even put it on. A good picture of one is the one that Rob Roy McGregor wore in the movie Rob Roy. I need to start practicing with the archery, because it has been a while since I have used a bow. I use the English style long bow. Have always been a fan of Robin Hood and the Green Arrow.

I used to shoot my bow regularly. But I shoot at 100 yards, and the only field nearby where I could put a target at that distance was taken over by a local baseball team. I still go to a rifle range to shoot my rifle collection, but I haven't had the bow out in years.

I used to shoot a compound quite often...65 lb pull Bear...got pretty good too...did the same with an old recurve my late father-in-law had at the same weight...got tired of ripping out moustache hairs on the strong side, and finally gave it up. ;)

I doubt I could even BREAK a 65 lb pull compound now, let alone a recurve! To many years have gone by now....

Regards! Michaelson
