    Hollywood Jackets

Hi everyone, I found this nice Hollywood jacket and hope to obtain some information from any experts out there. From what I can tell, it is a 1940s-50s vintage jacket made of wool gabardine with a satin (or something similar) lining. There are no labels or other maker marks to be found...

    Bush Jackets

I had the privilege of spending last weekend with friend and fellow wildlife biologist, Jim Fowler. Many of you might remember him from Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" television series. Jim is sporting an original Willis & Geiger bush jacket in olive. I am wearing a WPG belted bush jacket in...

Adventure! Fedora Lounge Folks in Action!

Hey everyone! Thought I would check in seeing that I'm long overdue for a stop at The Fedora Lounge. Sorry for my leave of absence but I was first up to my @%#! in alligators, then sort of hanging out elsewhere. That's me, not so vintage attire, exploring and mapping the remote western...

WWII Roughout Boots, Size 10, Anyone????

Got a very lightly used pair of repro WWII Army Roughout Boots in men's size 10. They have never been waterproofed, hence they retain their original tan coloration. I swapped the original russet laces for matching tan ones to make them into desert boots. Very little wear on sole. Asking $50 plus...

Lace to toe v standard lacing.

Lace-to-Toe boots are supposed to offer better fit and stability. The reason is the ability to lace the toe & forefoot area tighter/looser, lock the laces, then lace the ankle & shaft differently - in other words, different lacing for different parts of the foot. If you just stick with a basic...

    History Lost

As it turns out, my friend tried selling the bed at a neighborhood flea market. End of the day and nobody bought the bed. She could've sold the entire bedroom suite had she left it in original condition. shakeshead

    History Lost

I was perusing Facebook earlier today, when a friend's photos caught my attention. There before me was a beautiful set of "Waterfall" bedroom furniture, a classic design of the Golden Era. Just last year, I acquired my own Waterfall bedroom suite (in near perfect condition) after a very lengthy...

That's pretty neat, Mojave. When I first saw it, I thought it was an old Indian Fire Pump.

Ideas please about 20/30's bush clothing

I recommend that you stay away from Hollywood when looking to put together an authentic outfit. Instead, consult the period photos and writings of explorers and hunters. Theodore Roosevelt - River of Doubt Expedition Superb account of bush clothing and gear in "The River of Doubt: Theodore...

    Safari Express rifle pic thread

Finally...it has arrived! New condition, Whitworth express rifle chambered for the venerable Three-Seven-Five Holland and Holland. It's much more balanced and less clunky than the Winchester 70 (safari express) that I owned & sold a few years ago. The Whitworth will be heading to the gunsmith...

When wearing shorts become acceptable for grown men?

I was under the impression that is was acceptable for men to wear shorts at the beginning of the last century and right on up through the Golden Era. As others have mentioned, shorts were worn as military uniforms. They were also commonly worn by explorers and hunters, particularly in tropical...

Choosing a Goodwear hide just got harder!

Here's the "typical" swatch of dark russet horsehide (right) laid over the actual jacket horsehide leather for comparison. Camera makes the russet leather appear much more reddish than it actually is (looks more like walnut in person). Quite a difference in the grain of the same type of leather.

Choosing a Goodwear hide just got harder!

In all honesty, the steerhide in your photo looks remarkably like John's grainier horsehide. I purchased a 1941 Werber A-2 from John a few years ago. My jacket is made with dark russet horsehide, using a mix of smooth and grainy leathers. In the photo below you can see some of the smoother...

    Any Tips on safari outfit?

"Today, if you want to stand out as a "dude," the best way to do it is to show up in Africa with a leopard-skin hat band. I know. Years ago I did it and I can still hear the chuckles. If you want to be a super dude, arrive with a fake leopard-skin band." Peter Hathaway Capstick Safari, The Last...

    Safari Express rifle pic thread

Hey Renault! I noticed your Whitworth earlier in this thread. That's definitely some beautifully grained walnut on the stock! How does she shoot?

    Safari Express rifle pic thread

Well, since posting in the early days of this thread I've sold my Winchester 70 safari express. Even though the rifle had a very smooth action and was quite accurate, I was never happy with the weight/balance of the firearm. I think Winchester could modify the barrel contour and slim down the...

Mojave - you can order them direct from Palladium (http://www.palladiumboots.com/shop/us-men/us-men-footwear.html). Zappos (http://www.zappos.com/palladium-mens-shoes~1) also carries them. Have a look at the leather ones. They might be just what you need. For anyone who used to get their...
