Golden Era Adventurers, Explorers and Heroes...

There are probably hundreds of explorers, adventurers, etc. that were active in the first half of the 20th century. Some of my favorites are: - Theodore Roosevelt, hunter, explorer, soldier, president. - Sven Hedin, explorer - Frank Buck, adventurer, procurer of wild animals - Jimmy Angel...

One great western from the 50's is Winchester '73 . It stars Jimmy Stewart, and it shows on TV from time to time.

    War of the Worlds

To take Swinggal's comments a bit further, some classic stories don't translate well in a modern setting. For example, Sherlock Holmes stories work best set in Victorian England.

    City Heat - A 1930s era oddity

If I remember correctly, there were two or three improvements made to the 1911 in 1926: one was a lenthened grip safety tang to prevent hammer bite to the hand, a second change was replacing the flat main spring housing with a curved one to allow a better grip, and the third change was a trigger...

    The Best of the Best

Thanks Wolf, I check PulpGen once a week for downloadable reprints. If anyone wants more pulp sources check ThePulp.net. There are a number of small publishers that reprint pulp stories. Yes, I have seen "Red Dust" and "Test Pilot" and count them among my favorite movies from the '30s.

    The Best of the Best

I, too, liked the Green Hornet and Shadow radio programs. Of the hero pulps, the best were Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Spider. However, my favorite pulp magazines were the general adventure pulps, such as Adventure, Argosy, Blue Book, and Short Stories. The period between the wars was the...

How did they keep those hats on?

According to Clayton Moore in his autobiography, he inserted surgical tubing inside the hat band to keep his hat on. I always thought it looked odd for hats to stay on during those furious serial fistfights.
