    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Totally agree. I work in Lower Manhattan. When the snow starts melting (and chunks of ice start falling from 25 or 50 floors above) the Christys bowler goes on. :eusa_clap

Show Us Your Dark Side - Shadow and Silhouette Portraits

The "crushed fedora" I won from the New York Times a couple of years ago.

    R.I.P. cooncatbob :: Robert H. Smith

I was sad to read about this over at Badger and Blade. I have (or had) several of his pieces, and he was always a pleasure to deal with. Condolences to his family.

My fedora is in the NY Times!

I think so. It's been a while since I've read them. Although I've just ordered some from Amazon.

My fedora is in the NY Times!

Thanks, all! What's really cool is that Bill Pronzini posted a comment. He's the writer I cited as an inspiration for my effort. If you told me 20 years ago, when I read a bunch of his Nameless Detective novels, that one day I'd be communicating with him via the NY Times, I'd have said you were...

My fedora is in the NY Times!

There's a picture of my fedora in this NY Times blog post. Since I'm sure you're curious, I'll tell you I bought it in 2000 at Hat Corner in Lower Manhattan, and had it reblocked there a couple of years ago. Sadly, this landmark store, which moved a few years ago, has disappeared.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Congratulations, it's a fabulous hat! Looks great on you.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

I regularly wear my Christy's bowler and my Bollman derby. On the busy streets of NYC, they barely draw a look. But they can also be conversation-starters. The comments I get are always favorable. PS: undertaker, you look great in your bowler!

Tress tristesse I'm sad to say goodbye to this Tress & Co. bowler, but it's too big for me, and I'm hoping it will go to someone who can actually wear it. Here's a link to the Classified post.

    FS: Tress & Co. Bowler

For sale: Tress & Co. bowler, dark brown, size 7-1/2 (61 cm), stingy brim (about 1-1/4"), in what appears to be the original box. Hat is in excellent condition (box is in delicate condition -- bottom of box is coming loose). There are two small spots on the brim, one on the top side of the brim...

Wow, beautiful! Looks to be in pristine condition.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Pretty stingy. I'd say it's about an inch from the side of the hat to the curl. Maybe a shade more. One thing that impressed me is that the hat is light as a feather. Noticeably lighter than my Christys. Thanks for commiserating.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Heartbreak! I won this Tress & Co. bowler on the 'Bay a few days ago. It arrived today. This is my first vintage bowler, and I must say it met and exceeded all my expectations based on the auction photos and description. It is quite simply a gorgeous hat! Sadly, it doesn't fit me. It's a...

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Yes, the brim isn't just stingy, it's miserly. Mars the effect, IMO.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

This is true. I wear a bowler because I enjoy the look and feel (and history) of the hat; I probably wouldn't wear one if I "had to". I especially like dressing down my bowler. I've worn it with a parka in the snow (a case of literally dressing it down, as in "eider"), and more recently with a...

Fine-looking hat! Is it really blue? Edited to add: filename is navybowler.jpg. Duh!

Brad, many thanks for your thoughts. You make a compelling case for vintage. I need to do some homework -- starting with this thread, and your wonderful blog, which I've just begun to read. First steps on what promises to be an interesting journey.

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

If it's heresy, then I sympathize with it, to a degree. It kind of goes with the territory of an unmoderated forum. But I've run a forum (not apparel-related) for 10+ years and have participated in enough others to know that generic, open-ended questions from newbies can become tedious for forum...
