I have been studying the 1947 USN regs and a couple gems re: enlisted peacoats: (1) the regs still call for 10 buttons, not yet 8, BUT:
"Art. 7-25. - Regulation that enlisted men's overcoat shall be worn
buttoned to the neck has been deleted in view of the fact that new
stocks of enlisted men's...
Picking up this old thread. I believe the dark caps were dark Navy blue eyes to match the DB jackets and trousers. At least I believe this to be the case in the 30s and 40s. I saw a reference recently from a Pan Am radio operator to Navy blue uniforms. He flew on Clippers from 1942. The white...
For the lizards in the lounge, when did the 4x1 double breasted jacket begin to be acceptable, common wear? An unscientific review of 1940s movies suggests 4x2 was already pretty common, with some 4x1, but what are others' thoughts?
Similar question, when did brass and other metal buttons first...
Just posted on eBay a size Large, new condition tanker by ATF (unlabelled but it is theirs). Very nice:

Just listed on eBay a size 42 Buzz Rickson tanker in new condition. It's too small for me (I have a sz. 46 I will be holding on to).

I also have 2 sz. LARGE ATF tankers, also in new condition, I'll be posting...
Double breasted suits and sportcoats with notched lapels (including 4 button, one fastened with long roll lapel). 1920s-1950s: Discuss? Photo evidence?
Resurrecting a very old thread but what is the board's view on 1920s-40s authenticity of notched lapel DB jackets? I have a 4-button (one fastened, long roll lapel) with notched lapels that I quite like. It is contemporary and not vintage, but was wondering if it was even an acceptable...
"Blue" socks or "black" for ratings in white shorts? Also, did ratings white shorts differ in their specs form officer white shorts? I am familiar with RN white shorts that have two attached cloth belts with white metal buckles, vertical side pockets at side seams, no rear pockets. Were these...
If the first link is not getting you the whole document. Try the link(s) off the Coast Guard's website here:
https://www.uscg.mil/history/uscghist/USCG_Uniform_Index.asp
When I found these the other day, I felt like I had found the key to the kingdom. Thank you Coast Guard -- Semper Paratus.
At this link, you'll find the USCG uniform regs from 1930 as amended through mid 1941. On p. 94 of the .pdf, you will note an amendment dated 11/21/1938 replacing the prior specs for the peacoat (as recognized by the USCG) and substituting the specs as we know WW2-era peacoats to be...
...and here's one in No.3s w- sub sweaters. No creases but I just love this photo (note the split under the arm of the rating at left from hard service). Coastal Forces MTB -- Coastal also had a thing for the white sweater.
...and lest we think this only applied to boys in the cadets, here are some more period photos which, under magnification, show creases on all or some of the ratings to be in the same inward and outward directions on each leg.
In this photo, the first rating in the rear row looks to have his...
Picking up this thread again late I'm afraid. I have actually seen numerous period photos of ratings in No.1 and No.3 dress with the inward and outward creases being the same on each leg of the trousers, and some photos showing groups exhibiting creases both the same and opposite directions...
