I figured they are for protection of the soles but the piece at the front bends up and around the edge only. It doesn't protect the entire sole. It's almost as if intended to be used to protect the shoes when bumping things along with the edge of the shoe? I would have expected something to...
Is this the place for instructors to vent?
I teach an entry level construction course at the local college. It is downright scary how many students I get that have never used a hand tool, much less a power drill or a saw. With shop classes being pulled from grade school, we have an entire...
Greetings folks. It's been a while since I post here but I need some help. The attached photo is of the bottom of a work boot believed to be from the 1940's. I'm curious about the metal plates on the bottom. The one at the heel actually comes up and wraps around the back of the boot. On the...
living in south Fl, we worry more about people going down the road with no insurance, no license, and no citizenship!
anyways... how did we go from hipsters to cars?!?
"updates" aren't always to your benefit, specially with free apps. it's not uncommon for that wonderful free app you got a few months ago to suddenly not work so great because you updated it and they want you to buy the paid version. i don't update jack unless the new version of the app has a...
im quite happy with my samsung galaxy s. its an old phone by today's standards. my buddy has the galaxy 3 and he's very happy with it.
i tend to keep phones until they die. a very important factor in my phone purchase is a user replaceable battery. something the iphone does not have. i can buy...
i think you may be referring to the diamond shaped antennas that had multiple turns of wire and usually sat on the radio? not hard to make at all. it's just wood and wire. cloth covered wire can be purchased from antique electronic supply. thin wire is easier to work with and cheaper if you're...
my current girl i met via the interwebs. this one has lasted me the longest. usually they last 3 years or so. guess maybe this ones the keeper.
i am bluntly honest though when i meet a young lady. i always let them know that i have a few "collections" and my collections are quite important to...
I collect lionels. Recently moved my collection into 5 rollaway toolboxes for safe storage. My collection is mostly 1950s and earlier.
Occaisionally i may find some other cool vintage toy. Just snagged an erector 10 1/2 set. Its going to the auction though. Last i need is another thing to...
currently enjoying a Churchill from the local cigar emporium while listening to Jump Jive and Wail on an AM portable. i alternate sticks from the local place and stuff from that place 90 miles south of me. the local place has some plantations in Estelli Nicaragua that produce some decent long...
WW2 throws an interesting twist into things. i'm a ham radio guy and know how to use tube gear. we were a commodity during WW2. as long as I'm in the rear with the gear, it's all fine with me.
a few years ago, i wrote a detailed article on how to revive a vacuum tube tabletop radio. a great many people have found it useful. i think the crowd here may find it useful as well. the article deals with the most commonly found tabletop radios of the 40's-50's.
going back that many years...
i had seen the much older radio thread but my experience from other boards has been that once a thread is a few years old, they prefer you start a fresh one. lesson learned, it's ok to revive threads here.
it's nice to see a healthy appreciation for vintage radios here!
