    Fedora Lounge Membership Surpasses 30,000

Personally, I'd like to cancel my name, erase my old posts and leave. The high muckety-mucks that run things won't hear of that though. I guess in that respect, this place resembles a roach motel -- once you're in, there's no way out - you're stuck. I'm not laughing. Newcomers, beware.

    When did the smiles begin?

Ahh, footnotes, the key to finding obscure texts. (great post btw, Vitanola!) This comes from Antony Sutton, Wall Street and FDR "Roosevelt's Progressive Party plugging for business regulation was financed by Wall Street, including the Morgan-controlled International Harvester Corporation and...

    When did the smiles begin?

That's precisely how it works. The well-connected rich have no fear of regulation or "reform" because they always buy themselves loopholes. Too bad for those without connections and influence. They lose. LizzieMaine, is your caption under Welch's picture your own jest, or did he really say...

    When did the smiles begin?

Trustbuster? TR? Of the Wall Street connected political Roosevelts who've held office since 1700? A few of his highlights. He was the grandson of Cornelius Roosevelt, founder of Chemical Bank. He held various NY state offices until elected VP in 1900, assumed the Presidency in 1901 after the...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

I'll bite on a couple of these... Need? No, but given a car with an eager engine, a capable suspension and the right mood, it can be euphoric. Try it sometime. ;) Agreed, this one particularly irksome because it's such an obvious con. The Biblical path to wealth is laid out in the...

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

When it comes to typical manufactured goods, you can have 1) Style/Features 2) Quality 3) Price Pick any 2 you want. You can't have all three. As long as Quality is 'good enough', most consumers pick Features and Price, which is why Big Box stores do so well.

Photo of 747 cabin ca. 1969-70. Look at the people!

Hi folks, here's a photo I find very interesting. It's an apparently random shot of the interior of a 747 when they first came out ca. 1969 or 70. While the aircraft is interesting, what really gets me is how slim, healthy and well-dressed ordinary, everyday people were back then. How...

What time period would you live in, and where, if you had to for one year?

I had L300s, so I know what you mean. With good tube amps like yours, they sounded better, but with 'hard' sounding solid state stuff, ouch! I'd suspect your Phase Linear, with it's designed-in sloppy power supply regulation, isn't too terrific. As for the Bozaks and Wharfedales, they sound...

What time period would you live in, and where, if you had to for one year?

Not bad, but that list only begins to describe the greatness of the 70's. To it I would add - CBS Radio Mystery Theater Led Zeppelin (yeah I know they began in the 60's but they really hit their stride in the 70s.) Dire Straits Large, loud JBL speakers Japanese electronics Japanese cars...

Babe Ruth in color ca. 1945

Here's rare color photo of Babe Ruth ca. 1945 shortly before he died. Note the haircuts, overcoats, police uniform.

    Harking for a simpler time.....

Once again, we see things very differently. In my view the internet is the best invention since the Gutenberg printing press. How else could small, disorganized groups and individuals communicate so cheaply & easily while doing an end-run around the gatekeepers of "approved" opinion? It lets...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

Totally agree, especially if there are pets around. Just picturing larvael egg cases of parasites nestled between carpet fibers freaks me out. Give me one of those modern wonders of architecture with hard surfaces everywhere!

Are FLers opimistic about the future?

Foxer, I started this thread in part because all over the board there's a lot of bashing of present cultural circumstances. A lot of these criticisms are trivial in nature. It also seems there's a reciprocal tendency to overly revere the past. My concern is that there's a lack of long term...

Are FLers opimistic about the future?

Miss/MrsMaine you've read 1984 and that's good but have you considered the effects of international trade on the various countries working classes? In China multiple millions have moved off of subsistence farms and rice paddies to gleaming modern cities. This shift has taken place in one...

Are FLers opimistic about the future?

For 800 years the educational model has been for students to travel to a centralized location to learn from a master in the subject. This cost them not only time, but travel tuition, and board costs, not to mention the forfeited income they could have stayed home and earned. Thus education...

Are FLers opimistic about the future?

What, pessimism? Let me lay a couple more things on you guys then. Take South America. Chile, Brazil and Argentina are major advanced economies. They're starting to make their presence felt internationally. Some of them offer more freedom, especially economic, than we have here. How about...

Are FLers opimistic about the future?

I may be in the minority here, but I see more reason for optimism now than any time in the last thirty years. A couple of examples - It seems like many youngsters are disappointed with their baby-boomer elders in the area of personal conduct- drink/drugs, sexual matters, ethics, business, and...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

A general tip on engagement rings -- military bases are known for unstable quickie romances that don't last. So, head for the nearest pawnshop or three outside of a base. They will be loaded with castoff, barely used engagement sets, cheap. A word to the wise: don't tell your lady her...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

Something I'd like to see gone: No Fault Divorce. This is a forty year old experiment that rests on the ridiculous premise that who was 'doing' whom doesn't matter. While I'm on the subject, I'd like to see divorce laws reflect a "winner take all" system, where the innocent spouse gets...
