Hey there, I have a few hat blocks, #51's, Salt, and #400's. I can see subtle differences in them, but I don't know exactly what blocks are best for what hats. Where could I find more info on them (and hat blocks as they pertain to hat styles in general?) Thanks!

Do you have folding instructions for this style bow? I am trying to reverse engineer it but can't see enough detail in the pics. Thanks!

    PORTIS HATS

Thanks guys! I had popped into this vintage store where I've bought a few lovely hats from, and they had a nice Stetson that fit me perfectly but it wasn't priced and they said I needed to wait till the next day when the owner came in. So when I went back to get the Stetson, this was sitting...

I looked more carefully. The sweatband is sewn into place with kind of a unique stitch pattern and I would hate to destroy it. So it's going to stay hidden. :D

    The GREATEST Menswear Store Ever?

I just posted this in the hat forum, and a member encouraged me to post this here. Picked up a Alexander & Oviatt hat at a vintage store near Hollywood the other day. It's felt and silk and in pretty good condition given it's age.

    Alexander & Oviatt

I'm also thinking that after reading the article that I linked to, where it says Alexander died in 1921. The hat you linked to just says Oviatt's, so perhaps it was made after that, but if mine says Alexander and Oviatt, and the owner of the hat was born in 1911, he would have been just a kid if...

    Alexander & Oviatt

Beautiful hat! It's great to see another one. Tomorrow I'll inspect the hat further to see if I can get at another label. Thanks for that info.

The sweatband is actually sewn down, except in the tiny spot where my husband is pulling it back to show the store tag. Here's the liner logo, thanks for reminding me.

    Alexander & Oviatt

Picked this up yesterday near Hollywood at a vintage store, it's a really beautiful hat made for Alexander & Oviatt which was a men's haberdasher in Los Angeles that opened in 1911 and closed in 1969. The store and its owner have quite an interesting history and the gorgeous building he had...

I know I've seen a thread here somewhere on books about hatting, but darned if I can find it again. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Thanks everyone, I might go with the tennis balls and the wood screws. We're probably going to be moving to a new city in the next few months, so I have thought of just packing them up but I kind of want them around me for reference as I am learning how to hat.

I'm wanting to display my collection of Stetson, Resistol, Akubra, Borsalino, Dobbs and Baron hats (among others) on the wall of my studio. I have probably 20-25 hats to display and was going to use 3" black pipe with a flange and a cap, but that would cost well over $150. which is awfully...

OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Here's a Baron Custom hat from Baron Hats in Burbank, CA. They make most of the hats for the movies. I sent a photo of it to the owner of Baron and he told me it was at least 25 years old and made by the original owner. I'm hoping to pop by the shop with it sometime for them to tell me more...

Hi folks, I'm looking for some instructions on how to make grosgrain hat bands and the bows. I can't seem to find any video tutorials anywhere and I really don't want to reverse engineer my vintage hats and mess them up. Are the bands and bows one continuous piece of ribbon or are they separate...
