    What Are You Reading

I had a history professor who would assign Collingwood to students who wanted credit for late assignments: the student was to read and apply the book to analyzing yet another book (pre-approved by the professor). He claimed it was the best method he'd found for discouraging late assignments...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

    An ex-girlfriend.

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Jackie Mason, one of the last of the Borscht Belt comedians, has passed away. Aside from being a comedy great, he was known for voicing Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, father of Krusty the Clown on The Simpsons. He had a great voice and comedic presence...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

The widow of an acquaintance of mine is still driving the 1961 Ford Falcon he bought her new as a wedding present. Since I told him I'd keep an eye on the car safety-wise, I was over there recently to change the oil, lube, etc. I couldn't help noticing that it still has a line of window...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

I'm in the same boat. He was always a competent actor that (other than Mac) when I saw the news I could only recognize a familiar face I'd seen dozens of times. It took me a moment to think of roles he'd played. I saw him onstage a couple of times, and it was the same way: halfway through...

Canning without the use of plastic?

Oneof the best sources of canning supplies (as well as all kinds of "stuff" for the Victory Gardener) is Lehmans: https://www.lehmans.com/ They may have what you're looking for.

Amelia Earhart May Have Survived Crash-Landing

Depends on a lot of factors, not least of which is your budget! I've dealt with this some for professional reasons (paternity, establishing familial relationships, etc). Depending on what kind of test, how busy your lab is, etc, you could have results in a few days to months. Dealing with old...

You know you are getting old when:

Been getting those since my age was measured in single digits, trying to stop them for almost as long. Asking them to stop doesn't work. Telling them to stop doesn't work. Begging them to stop doesn't work. Telling them I was dead worked til I had to renew my driver's license.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I had a friend offer to "animate" some pics of my father, who died when I was young. I declined, it just seemed very . . . creepy. And ghoulish.

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

In 8th grade, I got held after school for singing one of those songs in the hallway. The teacher (actually our school librarian) asked why I was there. After I explained, she told me to "go forth, and sing no more (but bring that issue in tomorrow so I can see it)". Best detention ever.

You know you are getting old when:

They aren't fiberglass. Most of them are polypropylene, with what I find to be an annoying tendency to flex, and may become brittle below freezing. Smith & Sons in London has an excellent reputation for providing and fitting good sticks. Many of the tropical hardwoods, or even ash, hickory...

Amelia Earhart May Have Survived Crash-Landing

The "dock photo" was published in a Japanese travel guide in 1935. If a particular dock wasn't built until 1936, then the photo was taken elsewhere.

'Vintage' things you wouldn't bring back, but wish you'd seen?

Airships. There's just something about long distance travel in a zeppelin that interests me. I'm not sure I'd want to ride one, but I'd like to see them in the skies.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

My great-aunt had a cat who got rather selective about food as it aged. She used a crock pot to stew a whole chicken, then removed the bones and puree'd the rest into a gelatinous "gravy". The cat got a pate-like canned food, with a couple spoons of the gravy (heated to about 100 degrees, not...

    Reviving an Old Garage

And have the outlets about 50" or more off the ground. This puts them high enough to avoid being covered by sheet goods (or most other things) leaned against the wall.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This isn't a bad approach, but I'd like to suggest a possible modification: before beginning have a time frame for completion in mind, and a plan to "dispose of the evidence" if you can't complete the task within that time frame.

um, actually, no. Who is "Steve Kornacki"that we'd be expected to recognize him, and what are "Palimino Brown Chinos"?
