My fist big purchase in hats about 12 years ago, was a Stetson Nostalgia. Honestly it has proved to be a miserable hat in many respects. In others, it takes a beating and keeps on ticking.
The felt, honestly is not much better than wool. There are some defects like a strange line that runs...
My new Mallory...
It was listed as "1950-1960" personally I think it's closer to 1950. It has the 1817 date. No model that I can tell other than Manhattan with Sacramento slashed in script under Manhattan.

In the flintlock musket days, "shoulder arms/shoulder firelocks" was always on the left shoulder. Thus on a slouch or a riflemen's hat, the brim was turned up on the left.
If you have just a tiny interest in WWII and the lifestyles of that time I urge you to get a copy of Clark Lee's book They call it Pacific.
Lee was a reporter for the AP. His adventures start in November 1941 where he is working in the AP office in Shanghai. He was warned by some high ranking...
Some things that are great about wearing a fedora or any large brimmed hat.
1. my head is dry when it rains.
2. it keeps the sun out of my eyes, very handy while driving into the sun I just lower my head a little and the brim shades my eyes
3. Fedoras just look cool
4. my head is not...
Welcome to the forum,
You can learn a lot by using the search feature. I use the advanced search and under the topic I click "in title subject only". Just about any subject can be found that way. I have spent hours reading old posts and have learned a lot.
The Jaxon hats seem to be good...
I really do not care for the Peter Pan looking snap brims on some of these hats.
The more traditional but still stingy brimmed fedoras from this era I find really attractive. Honestly I can tell little difference between some of these 60s fedoras and early 30s fedoras.
It would be...
I really do not want one with vent holes. I do recall seeing a thirties or early forties vintage summer felt with three small vent holes on each side. I wonder how common this was? It seems like it was a Stratoliner.
I've searched Ebay for hats and my size 7 1/4- 7 3/8 is hard to find in a decent hat and when found they command a premium price. The general consensus is people were smaller back then and surviving hats are smaller.
The same can be said for mil-surplus.
An ex army veteran told me the...
I know felt hats can be worn all year long but what are some felt hats designed for warmer weather? The OR , Campdraft and Stratoliner come to mind but what are some other felt hats designed for warmer months. It seems I remember seeing some summer felts with vent holes.
I think Wolfman is on the right track. It could also be kind of an optical illusion being on the underside.
It also could be smoke stains. Does it seem darker under the front vs the back?
That is one special hat. Congratulations.
Thanks Chuck and Tom,
It is my understanding also that the Campdraft is more like the original Stetson OR than the present OR from Stetson.
I may try to get a Campdraft this spring in silverbelly and bash it in the early 1900s style. Hopefully it will look a little different from the LBJ...
Hello,
I'm new to posting on this forum even though I've read posts on here for quite some time. I want to say thanks to all of you for all the great information.
I am the new owner of a Stetson Nostalgia. I'm really proud of it. It is the nicest hat I own. I have it in a diamond bash...
I recently saw the movie The Little Fugitive, from 1953. It was a low budget independent movie - shot in Brooklyn, using real crowds and street scenes. The hat era was very clearly over by then.
That must have been filmed in the summer. I recently watched a program about the greatest NFL...
I can understand your frustration with such an expensive hat. I have had problems with the brims of my hats, one from 6 decades of who knows what, the others from occasional neglect "cheap hats". My 1939-40 Stetsonian was flattened and it took a while for me to get it back to "just right". My...
