diagonal pockets which I read was not seen on mens pants until 1954

Huh? I'm not so sure about that. I have a British ad from ca. 1939-41 before me that has flat-front sports trousers with diagonal pockets.

The suit looks pretty much mid-30's to me.

The writing in the waist points to "Marlene's Heirlooms" in Fond du Lac, which is renting costumes... guess they sold this off due to the damage.

Fastuni is right, slanting pockets were common in the teens, 20s and into the early 30s.

these are trousers from jazz suits of around 1920-21:

and these (mine) are from around 1928-30:

the suit in question has been added to the 20s suits thread. Marc reckons it's 1924-26.

i'd agree, hedging on the later end of that date and maybe adding a couple of years for luck.

HBK: I agree. I just posted my thoughts on the 1920s thread: the wide trousers make me think it would be late 1925 at the earliest.

P.S. Wasn't it 'Burma' who posted the suit in the 1920s suits thread? Not 'Marc'.

Eddie, or Burma Schave, (i prefer user names on public forums) my apologies for assuming you were someone else. when you first appeared on the 20s suits thread i didn't think you were Marc Chevalier in disguise, but was persuaded by someone else into believing you were him (always trust first impressions ;)). since he left Marc has returned twice under different user names, so i hope you can appreciate the confusion.
