Hello

I just found a nice 7X Clear Beaver Stetson at a local sale. The Stetson liner logo is entirely in gold. The single sweatband logo says Clear Beaver Quality under the row of seven Xs. A single photo showing both is below.

The felt is very dense but soft and easy to shape. The brim is 2.5 inches and the edge trim and ribbon are the same color as the felt. Can someone here help me date it please? And is this pretty much the same thing as a Stetson 100? or is that something else entirely?

See this thread which was created to help people date their Stetson hats based on the liner.

A Stetson 100 is something else entirely.

Does anyone here have any idea of it's age and approximate value?

Not without clearer shots of the liner and the sweatband. See the thread linked above for a lot of resources that can help you.

One more thing, the clear plastic film that covers the logo under the crown is starting to crack and break off and I'm wondering if I should just remove that plastic all together. Any ideas on that? I don't see any reason not to remove it but thought I'd ask here first.

You can remove it. It doesn't do anything, really. I removed them from most of mine.

I wanted to move this post over to the Stetson liner thread but for some reason the system wouldn't let me delete this one ... E

Dinerman I was thinking the same thing. Lefty put up a picture in the other thread that looks like this one but I don't think anyone commented on it. Anyway, I'm new to the hat dating game and appreciate your help - E

Zetwal, you are asking essential questions which are very difficult questions.

For one, the very style of your hat does not indicate age. That style of hat (I'm not saying "denomination/name/qualification") has been produced since the mid or late 1930's, so ("open road") style is of no help in dating this kind of hat.

Dinerman -a hat historian of sorts here- says he believes "1950's". Chances are he's right.

Let me reply to you by giving something further to think about. I have a 7x Stetson of very same style. Light brown sweatband. Very same logo in the center of the liner, but no plastic sheet (but with a gold trim around the center fold of the liner). The hat does not mention anywhere the words "Clear Beaver". The Stetson logo on the sweatband is rotated "vertically", i.e. standing up when you put the hat on the table (many, if not most, such logo's are "lying on their side").

I suspect my hat is more recent than yours, even though not "very" recent (the sweatband would be very dark -almost black- color) - 1965-1975 range?

Value? Please let the market decide. I pay a lot for hats lol but that's because I'm in Europe and (relatively) "unprivileged" in respect of American hats. The value will not, as far as I can tell, be anything extraordinary. Some people won't buy any previously worn hats, for reasons of hygiene (and I understand that perfectly well). The values I've seen rarely exceed $100 and the lucky eBay searcher may get away with quite less.

The story of dating lol Stetson hats is, as I am discovering, a complex and involved matter. There appears to be no easy way. There are quite a few threads on the board, trying their best to reach concensus; via the liner, the sweatband, the logo. Difficult and...fascinating. To me, Stetson hats are..well...manifest destiny.

Hello Paul

Thanks for sharing observations on your CB and mine. As far as I know this is the oldest pure beaver hat that I own, and I really do like the felt and color.

I'm thinking that it should be worth it to have it cleaned, etc. and keep it.

Zetwal -- I agree with D-man that your lid is likely from the 50's. It would be great to see more photos of the hat itself!

Cheers,
JtL
