Adding a hat loop to a fedora sweatband

Hey beautiful fedora people. A while back, I had a fedora that had a hanging loop on it, and it was one of the most darn useful things I've ever had on a hat. I could clip the hat onto a backpack if I was off backpacking, and now that I've got a 4 year old who loves riding on my shoulders it would be really handy to be able to clip the hat to my belt.

Has anyone here ever modded their hat sweatband to add a hanging loop on? Any tips on how to go about it? I've seen a few picks on the German/Austrian thread but thought maybe there's some advice someone here may have.

I haven’t modded one but I can show you how Bob Jesse @ BSHW does his on vintage clones.

When the loop is pulled in I slide the coin behind the sweat.

I don’t know about having a good hat hanging from your belt, swinging around. I have only used the loop a couple of times hanging my hat from a wooden chair picket or spindle.

That is interesting. I hadn’t seen this loop before. What is the significance of the white material - I assume a strip of ribbon - that is threaded horizontally through a portion of the sweatband behind the bow?

I believe that is a throwback to when sweatbands had ribbon running all the way around so they could be tightened a bit by pulling the ends taut and retying the bow. Just ornamental now.

Clever design. I can see that being useful to secure a hat on wall hook a little more than just setting the hat on the hook, leaving it vulnerable to breeze et cetera.

I've used something akin to this myself:

I have one clipped to the Indy bag I carry in hot weather. Expecially in Beijing it's been really useful when going into places like museums where I want to take the hat off and not have to carry it. I've had a hat hanging from the bag with one of these very successfully. Though I should add I've only done this with a couple of A3 caps and Daisy Maes - with a nice felt I'd be worried it might leave a mark if dnapped tight enough to hold securely.

A lot of ebay/ Amazon / et cetera sellers do something similar, except instead of a clip for the hat it's a magnet:

Might be a better option that's less likely to mark a nice hat, though I've not tried one as of yet.

The loop could be used over the hook of a coat hanger with the hat hanging over your coat but you would still need plenty of room between garments so as not to smash your hat. As on a coatrack or hatcheck room.
