It looks like I am reviving an old thread here. I love hats and have been wearing them off and on for about 20 years. I am also from the Northwest, mostly Portland. I still wear hats a lot here on the coast in a small town. Some of my hats are vintage and some are not. I usually will wear something modern day with one of my hats or a hat with a vintage broach. The other day i went shopping in salem (closest major shopping for me) and I wore a 1950's black faux fur coat (not an outragous one or anything) and a 1960's black newsboy cap, black Jeans and black boots. It seemed as though a lot of people were looking at me. My Mom said that she thought it all looked cute. After shopping I went to my Mom and Dad's house and thier dogs were barking at me and my Mom said why are they barking and my Dad said they are barking at the ugly hat our daughter has on. I said funny Dad. They bark at me every time hat or no hat.

If you take a look at this thread by Matt Deckard you will notice that almost EVERYBODY is wearing a hat. It's unfortunate that anybody who's wearing a hat, a REAL hat not those darn baseball caps, is looked at funny these days. I say wear whatever you feel comfortable in and forget what other people think. IMO, A hat is definitely a perfect accent that makes an outfit complete.

So true...an example is, I went out one evening with the whole vintage look-head to toe- had the hat, gloves, ect., I found that the one's who were giving me the dirtiest looks were teenage girls, whereas middle-aged and up would give me a smile. There was one older lady that actually came up to me and shook my hand and said how lovely it was for her to see a young lady in a hat looking all respectable...I just thought that was the cutest compliment and made sure I gave her a big hug.
Summer time for some reason is a lot easier for me to wear a hat on my head...maybe it's because it gives me an excuse for wearing some head protection![huh]

You may or may not be the only hat wearing girl in the Northwest, but I am certain I am close to being the only one in Des Moines, Iowa.

I wear fedoras and newsboy caps. The caps are fine, there are women who wear them here, mainly African-American and Pan-Asian women. Fedoras -- I don't know: I've seen a couple of stingy brims on young African-American women and one on an elderly white woman.

When I saw some Red Hat Society women in a restaurant recently, I almost ran up to hug them.

I see tons of baseball caps on women. Even on the coldest days here, I see women outside bareheaded -- not even a stocking cap to cover their heads, not even ear muffs. Guess they don't want to muss their "do's." Of course, the wind does that anyway.

Haven't had too many comments here on the hats, except for some yo-yo at a casino shouting I was in the Mafia (was wearing a rose-colored 2 inch brim fedora, very feminine). People here stare at you if they think you are weird.

I do get a lot of compliments on the newsboy caps.

Then go shopping and get her two! Summertime is a great time to start getting used to wearing a hat. A great straw hat goes great with just about everything. I think one of the hardest things about wearing hats, is finding what looks right on you. this would be a good opportunity to check out the local vintage stores, and hey, more reason to spend more time together, right? I find that for every 10 hats I try on, there's only 1 that I absolutely love the look of.

Not Northwest, but Midwest. Chicago to be exact. I am an avid lover of hats of all kinds and there is rarely a day that goes by without a hat on my head. And the looks. Well I like to think I've gotten used to them. My coworkers have chalked me up as "that crazy women in a hat" and I think they look forward to seeing the new additions to my collection. I rarely see people here wearing hats though. Many times these are the folks that stare at me wearing mine. To each their own I suppose-but to me I would always rather be hatted.

Lady Blue -- I need to learn to be as gutsy as you are. I never had a problem wearing my hats in Southern Cal. but, boy, do they stare and some glare) here in Des Moines.

I thought Chicago would probably be a bit more sophisticated or, at least, you wouldn't get quite as many stares, but sounds like you get your full share of it, too.

Someday, if I live long enough, I am going to move back to the desert.

I've started wearing my hats too! Is western Canada close enough to the Northwest?

I have a couple modern ones - a winter black felt smooshy one with pink velvet roses, a crushable 'straw' hat for the summer and my two new vintage purchases: wide brimmed tilted black Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca - esque hat (1940s? maybe later?) and smaller soft brown 1930s hat with small ostrich feather.

One of my sisters made a New Year's resolution this year to wear more hats - we made quite a stir at a local Silent Film festival. Stares - yes. But so far, comments have been positive. A lady approached us and said, "Well, they're not Red, but they look smashing."

One funny story is that this past weekend I wore a 40s vintage suit jacket out to dinner, and a friend of mine - not a vintage-wearing guy or anything like that, just a "regular" joe - commented that I looked great, but something was missing... I said, "Is it a hat? I have one I was going to wear with this, but chickened out." "That's it!" he said "You need a hat!" So - there you go. I shouldn't have chickened out!
