I will say it. The best way to buy shoes is to try them on. Every shoemaker has different manufacturing and production specifications, different shoe lasts........ go to a store, try on a friend's shoe, or order several pairs and return the shoes that don't fit. Buying mail order shoes is not the best way to buy a shoe. That's why brick & mortar stores will have an advantage. Brands like Red Wing, Wovlerine, Thorogood, Allen Edmonds, Alden....... are sold in stores where you can try the shoes on.​

Almost all boot makers give the same advice to go down 1/2 size from Brannock. It depends on your feet. Most of the time, they want you to buy a snugger boot, so that it stretches out , breaks in, and shapes to your foot. No way to do that if the shoe is too big.

Shoe sizing is in length. You are suppose to have room from the toe of your foot to the end of the shoe. Different opinions on how much room. 1/2", 1", thumb's width ( and we all have different size thumbs ). This allows for the expansion and swelling of your foot. The ball of your foot, should fit at the widest part of the shoe where it flexes under the ball of your foot.​

Some bootmakers have a guide. You print out a chart from the internet, trace your foot, and that's suppose to be your boot size. I'm not so sure about that. If the pen is straight up and down, and tracing your foot, wouldn't there be about 1/8" to 1/4" variance from the side of the pen, to the tip of the pen, and the probability that the pen isn't perfectly up and down at a 90 degree angle to the paper? A Brannock device would be more accurate.​

No science whatsoever to this. I take a footbed from a pair of shoes that fit my feet. I measure the imprint. Amazingly, it comes out to my Brannock device size. My footprint shows that when I'm standing and walking, my foot goes up to about 11". The White's size guide tells me that I wear a size 10. My Brannock is a size 10. My 1000 Mile Boots, Red Wing Heritage Boots, Thorogood Boots....... all the boots that tell me to size down from Brannock....... all fit my Brannock size. Every time I've tried to size down a 1/2 size, the shoes felt too snug. Just my personal experience of course.​

There are no whites stockists in Europe

Most of those Pacific NorthWest boot companies do not have distribution channels and retailers. No way to try on the boot. Then they make these boots which are not labeled "true to size". And they expect you to size a boot based on tracing your foot with a pen. For me, that's a huge drawback.

Even in The USA, I can't try the boots on. I order, pay, then wait for months. What happens when the boot comes in the mail, and it doesn't fit?

Ebay... try your normal size first. I've bought & sold off several pair of White's and Nicks, no issue.
They are quite simple to resell based off reputation & build quality alone.

Although, if you are in Europe, watch the import fees, etc.

Who would be a similar maker over on that side of the pond?

There really isn't anyone doing that style which is believe is unique to America, in terms of build quality William lennon woukd be comparable but very different styling

Sure, I get it. Actually, looking at the White's Perry this is not a normal White's either, being Goodyear welted. Nothing wrong with them. Most of mine are Hand-Sewn/full stitchdown and hand-bottomed. It is amazing how comfortable they can be even at 7+ lbs for the pair. I do have one pair of Goodyear welted White's (The Otto White boots - I did a review of them on here as well) and they are very usable and comfortable for daily use and work. How they look...well, I'm not too focused upon that. I need a boot to work and work hard.
