Very nice sox and a nifty color selector, but at $18.95 + 19.95 shipping to Canada, it's not what I'd consider a reasonable price. I wouldn't mind paying the price of the sox, but 20 bucks to send a pair of sox to Canada is a major rip-off.

Sorry to sound so negative about your well-intended suggestion, but I'm really short-tempered with companies (and eBay sellers) making a profit on excessive shipping charges.

I didn't even consider shipping when I spotted the site, just a good selection of argyle stockings with low percentage of synthetic fibers.

I don't blame you for being put off by the shipping fee.

I have some thin cotton olive khaki-like knickers I got in Austria in 1989. They tie at the leg and are really pretty spiff, but the socks I got with them wore through ages ago. I just need some kind of patterned knee socks so I can wear those trou again.

Off to eBay, I guess.

Believe it or not, the plaid socks in the two links below look VERY golden era with plus-fours, even more so than do today's argyle socks. The catch? They're made for women. Even so, if you don't have very thick legs and you're not very tall, they'll do fine:

Some argyle ones, too ... and the price is right:

I have three pairs of the Golfknickers.com knee socks, two argyles and one solid grey. Only wore them once. I kind of wonder if their bright almost gaudy colors are maybe a little less than "period correct".
What I'd like to find is a pair of heavier wool or cotton knee socks with the nice knitted in patterns, characteristic of the 20's.
I have a pair of very light vintage linen plus fours, that I'll be wearing for the first time at Governor's Island this weekend, and the Golfkickers.com socks will look good with them (if a little gaudy lol ). But I also got a pair of heavy corduroy cross country skiing knickers, made by Woolrich, and I'd like socks that are warmer and more rugged to wear with them. Any ideas?

Here's a deadstock pair of late 1920s golf socks. Wool knit; woven in Scotland for Alexander & Oviatt. Note how the sock has a rounded calf. They don't make 'em like this today, folks:

Those are truly beautiful socks, Marc! Where did you ever find them?

BTW - I just found an eBay seller who has argyle knee socks (70%cotton/30%nylon) in low-key colors for a BIN price of 3 pr. for $7.95. I just bought some, but I think they have 7 or 8 lots left - PM me if anyone is interested.

Also look at European shooting/hunting supply, knickers and plus fours are still often worn for field sports in the UK, France, Germany, etc. I've had good luck with Sierra Trading Post for British socks, and also British, French, and Germany ebay. The German hunting store Ketner also carries some, I've picked up sale ones in their stores for cheap at the end of hunting season.

Argyle Socks for the big and tall man?

Gentlemen, I need help finding argyle socks in size 13 for my father. He's going for the 20s look and needs to cover up those gams for a vintage event this September. If any of you are in Georgia you should attend--Vintage Days at Peachstate Aerodrome in Griffin, GA. Please help if you know where to get such socks. The one-size-fits-all just won't do. If all fails, what is your opinion on plain socks with the Gatsby look? Please help!
