Black G-1

Does anyone know if the G-1 jackets were ever standard issue in black leather? I think there have been a few photos of at least one military officer wearing a black leather G-1.

I don't believe so. Some of thed seal brown jackets, though, were very dark. Much like Steve Macqueen's A2 in The Great Escape, which was very definitely dark brown yet looked black in some lights. I suspect that's what you're probably seeing in those photos. Wouldn't be hard to get a black one, though, if that's what you're after - Schott, Cockpit, Aero, and BuzzRickson have all done 'em at one time and another.

No, black has never been specified. Only seal brown. But as Edward observed, some of the later contracts are very dark. This 1992 Cooper is one of the darkest G-1s I've ever seen in person. Depending on the light, it can sometimes appear almost black.

Sharp jacket, Atticus! I'm tempted by one of these more recent issue G1s down the line later on. Looking first into an M442a with AVG patches, but an issue thereafter for when I prefer not to fly colourswould be handy (I spend time in some places where the Chinse nationalist flag wouldn't be such a great ideato parade, for one thing!).

Thank you, Edward. I'm generally not crazy about E-series G-1s and I bought this one to use as a "beater". I put “beater” in quotes because that's also how I rationalize buying less desirable guitars, deck jackets, Open Roads and most anything else that I don't really need. Anyhow, it turned out to be a very nice jacket even if it does have a dynal collar. I probably wear it the most often of all my G-1s.

It is. It belonged to guy at our local airport when this photo was taken. I think he sold it a year or so ago. I never flew a Pacer, but when I was a kid, my father's flying buddy owned a Tripacer. I remember them saying it had the exact same glide characteristics as a brick.

All the "SWAT" types around here wear black CWUs. Never seen anyone wear a G-1. That being said, if there was ever a television show that featured a G-1 wearing police detective, within a week every officer in Craven County would be begging his supervisor for a G-1.
