Boater\Skimmer ?

Hello Gentlemen,

While posting on another thread I began to think further into this question and wonder if anyone out there can tell me the difference between a Boater and a Skimmer. I have one or the other, not really sure but it looks very simular to Harold Lloyd's but mine may have a lower crown. Please advise.

The Wiki says A boater, basher and skimmer are one in the same.

My understanding is that a skimmer has a two inch brim, while a boater has a three inch brim.

And what is a sailor ?

Hat wise I mean. I ran across this ad and several articles that mention the panama and sailor hats.
The panama I love ever since I saw the one DanielJones got.

I have one on order from PanamaBob that should arrive in about a month.
But back to the sailor is IT also known as a boater?
Here is a ad from 1931.

When I bought my skimmer over the summer, the hatter referred to it as a sailor, so I suspect that they are interchangeable words.

Prior to the white cotton "dixie cup" the US Navy issued a straw hat. Your ad is at least 40 years after the end of that uniform item so I guess it's not the same hat/style. Feel free to ignore my rambling.
