From Stettin on the Baltic to Trieste on the Adriatic...

From Saigon we move to another interesting location wrapped up in the Cold War. These two Borsalino Homburgs, black and grey, came with (I'm hoping, anyway) their original boxes.

Perhaps a diplomat in the formerly sovreign port city of Trieste wanted a pair of dignified Homburgs to go with his various outfits? In any event, they appear to be exactly the same age and the same size, but the grey one seems to have been worn more often. It also had strips of cork (of all things) stuffed behind the sweatband, indicating perhaps that the gentleman wore the hat into his later years.

I wonder if a Lounger with a medical background could explain the physiology of the scalp, and perhaps explain why old fellows stuff newspaper and such into the sweatbands of their old hats, which one would assume fit correctly when first purchased?

Anyway, here are some pictures. Perhaps the Borsalino daters can have a go?

very nice hats. I love homburgs. They just seem to go out of my price range ... even in size 7!

1. all my old (30s) Borsas have the cork at the front ... (horror: you say "had" strips of cork. Tell me you didn't remove them!)

2. paper stuffing because the hat never fit. Someone with an odd sized head, for example.

The grey one had two pieces of cork (in the front and back), the black one had none. They were not attached in any way, just slipped in behind the sweatband and they're now safely stored in one of the hat boxes. They didn't look as if they were original to the hat.

I'll slip 'em back in if they're really original to the hats. :)
