Cap etiquette the same as hat etiquette?

Hi,

This may be a stupid question, but, do the precepts of hat etiquette apply when you are wearing a cap (let's say, like a newsboy or a flat cap). Wholly? In part?

I know that tipping applies. This is especially common in the UK among older tradesmen. Though with a flat cap it is just touching the peak, no raising or such. And watching the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films where Nigel Bruce's Watson sometimes wears a flat cap, it appears that it is doffed in the same way as a hat.

Well, you can wear a flat cap at pubs, and you shouldn't typically do that with a fedora.

Aside from that, I think the "rules" apply more or less the same. General rule of thumb with flat caps is to follow your own code as you do with brimmed hats BUT when in grey areas where you may or may not doff the fedora, you can get away with leaving the flat cap on, a lot.

Like someones house, people usually don't care if you leave a flat cap on, but may mind if you leave a fedora on. (If they don't have a hat rack they clearly aren't equipped to be accepting guests anyway! )

Then again, a lot of these rules are quite old, and some may, perhaps, deserve to be broken. The real "guideline" in etiquette is to do what is considerate of others. Obviously, this will vary by culture and place in history.
