my goal is to get a really wonderful vintage one in every color. The problem is I keep finding others I love. I really have a thing for cardigans. I am always chilly and carry one even in summer.

Found me another lovely cardigan. About this time of year is when my cardigan hunger starts. (thought all year long is available also) It is pretty isn't it. Hope it fits me.

Hubby and I were out at the outlet malls today, and J. Crew had THE most adorable vintage looking cardigans. They had a chiffon ruffle around the neck in the same color as the cardi. But they wanted something like $55 for them and it was just way too much in my humble opinion! Had they been $20 or so, I would have bought one in every color! lol

I'm with you on that one, but I must admit that I don't always have true vintage items as lots of my wardrobe is reproduction.

Hubby and I were out at the outlet malls today, and J. Crew had THE most adorable vintage looking cardigans. They had a chiffon ruffle around the neck in the same color as the cardi. But they wanted something like $55 for them and it was just way too much in my humble opinion! Had they been $20 or so, I would have bought one in every color! lol

I was at the outlet the other day and saw those cardigans! I *loved* them, and must have looked at them over and over about 15 times. But they were a little pricey, even at 15% off (When I saw them). I remember a blue one...oohh! I think I'll go on the lookout at the local thrift stores to see if I can find a few cardigans to add some ruffles to!

I lost out on an ivory shawl collar belted cardigan on ebay last year and I've been trying to find one like it ever since. I believe the seller described the sweater as a vintage Irish Fisherman, shawl collared, belted cardigan. I just loved it and haven't been able to find one like it. I wish I had a photo because I'm sure someone here would recognize where to get one.

I saw a tutorial somewhere for making your own by sewing ribbons or fabric to the underside of the edge of the cardigan. I can't find the tutorial right now but it shouldn't be too difficult to do on your own.

It's not at all the same but Old Navy has some nice plain ruffle neck cardigans:

I have two of them and although they're nowhere near as soft as JCrew, they've held up really well. There are a bunch of cute styles on Old Navy's website.

I have lots of great vintage pencil (and A-line) skirts for the winter. I also have lot of cute cardies. Question - what to wear under the cardi? I am now in a "buy up all vintage blouses you can find" phase (or a least, about to start one), but with me cardis are almost always worn open, at least partially, so I can't just wear a slip or something underneath.

What do you gals wear under your cardis?

Fair Isle Cardigans

I just got the new LL Bean catalog and thought you ladies who are fans of cardigans might like to see the fair isle cardigans. Very nice with a coordinating plaid skirt.
When I was in high school the girls who could afford them bought them at Carroll Reid ski Shop or LL Bean. The girls who couldn't (me) found them at Goodwill.

the most comfortable (under wool) would be a longsleeve cotton blouse or knit top. A silky long underwear top with a lacy neckline looks nice too.

It varies by season: in spring, summer, early fall, I wear camisoles of various styles, colors, vintage, design. In winter I have a stash of various solid-color Gap long-sleeve t's that are thin enough to work as an under-layer. Though my offices are generally warm enough to continue wearing camisoles.

Jcrew makes some great ones 100 percent cotton in summer...one of my favorite cardigans is actually from Abercrombie and Fitch , when I wear it with anything vintage, I tend to just cover up their little moose with a bakelite pin! I have a hard time finding vintage cardigans since I am allergic to wool, anyone have any links for some nice cotton ones?

I wear short sleeve blouses or camisoles of the outwear type under mine (i.e. camisoles that are basically nice-fabric tank tops, not underwear) because many of them would get bunchy sleeves if a longsleeved shirt was under them and I run hot anyway. Even ribbed tanks in cute colors can work if its a color that goes with some vintage-style accesories.

I would get lots of cute inexpensive camisoles and tanks in vintage-compatible colors and with some patterned ones. I used to never wear patterns on anything, but I'm branching out.

I have lots of tank tops, but I'm not wearing them to work under cardies....yikes! The tanks go under low-cut dresses or get worn to the gym or as PJs. I want something that I can wear solo if I want, if I want to take off the sweater.

Same with me! I wear my tanks to bed or around the house or under a low cut dress, sometimes for casual I wear one with a long cardigan and some skinny jeans, flats and a cool necklace, but never for dress up.

Well it depends what you mean by a tank, I guess. There's a lot of sleeveless blouses of varying levels of coverage and dressiness.

It depends on how the cardigan fits. Close-fitting: a well-made t-shirt is about the only thing that works for me (I never got the camisole bug). Tailored cardigans: the t-shirts or a fairly close-fitting sweater or blouse.

I have a couple of loose-fitting blouses and a vintage inspired blouse with a lot of gathers and puffly sleeves. None of my cardigans work with those.

It also depends on the neckline. With a v-neck cardigan, I think most necklines are fine. But I don't like a jewel-neck cardigan with a v-neck shirt under it.
