Recently received my first two vintage fedoras! One, a size 7 1/2 black Stetson, and a 7 3/8 dark brown cavanagh. Going by as I could learn from browsing old threads on here, I suspect that the Stetson is no older than the 60’s, but some of the cavanagh’s features make me hoping that it is from an earlier vintage… Hopefully some of the experts here will help date these more accurately! I'd appreciate it!
Here’s the cavanagh, images are from the ebay auction, as I haven’t had a chance to shoot my own yet. Dark brown with a dark brown/maroon ribbon. There’s no indication that is obvious to me of the felt quality, and being an FNG to vintage felt, I don’t know how it might rank on quality felt of its day. It feels nice to me though! Overall in very good shape I’d say, just a bit of wear around the front brim edge. And a very slight bit at the front of the center-dent crease. It’s quite lovely, though it fits just a bit more snugly than I typically prefer. Maybe I’ll search for good ways to stretch the hat a bit!
The Stetson is in good shape, though the seal on the liner has blurred and faded onto the plastic. I tried my best to take a photo that would show the crest. Should I go ahead and remove the plastic? It is a bit nasty.... the rest of the hat is in tip top shape though!
