I'm sure I'm not the only person in here who has spent quite a few years wearing Dickies 874s as an affordable and convenient trouser, both for the office and kicking about at home. (I even got married in a pair when we decided to put together our wedding with three weeks' notice during the early days of the Covid lockdowns.)

As I type, I'm just after receiving a marketing email proffering a new Dickies trouser, the 247 (as in 24/7) with its "modern loose fit". I very much like the look of the wider leg on these, but has anyone seen or tried on a pair? I can't find any information on the rise - lower than the 874 would be a dealkiller for me.

Nice!
This is 100% cotton instead of the 65% Polyester on the 874. I'm going order a pair to try and will report back if you still the info by then.

In the blue collar world, some guys only wore work pants. My Dad, still wears them, even though he is retired.

For some guys, a black pair of work pants is about the only formal pair of pants that they own.

When I was growing up, we had Ben Davis. Maybe because they were a local company, with local manufacturing. Every workwear store stocked them. Every blue collar worker wore the distinctive gorilla label.

With changes in buying habits, and the decrease of blue collar jobs, workwear stores are going away. People are buying online. Employers rent uniforms from giant corporations like Aramark. And there is a lot of overseas manufacturing. The market is flooded with off-brand clothes of similar style, selling for a fraction of the price. Even Dickies is made overseas.

The City used to have about a dozen workwear stores. Now, there's just one. They survive by accepting "city vouchers". City workers get uniform vouchers. The store submits those vouchers, and gets paid whenever City Hall's accounting department decides to allocate money in the budget to pay them off. They have to find factors to float their expenses, until the big payoff from The Government - which could be months away. By which time, a large portion of their profit is paid off to the lender. A very tough way to do business.

I own Dickies. I own other brands. I have no brand loyalty. I buy whatever is at a good price. I recognize that there are differences in quality. Dickies is not the best quality. There are other labels which are sturdier, longer lasting, built with better detail, etc. There are also a lot worse. Dickies is a solid product on sale. I just ordered a pair of 874 work pants and a work shirt from Amazon. They were marked down on sale. Delivered about 90 minutes ago. Dickies is a brand that I get my money's worth from. Their products, for the most part, are durable.

Thanks, yes - would be interested to hear how you get on. Full cotton would appeal. The poly mix is grand much of the year, but when it's warmer all-natural is definitely a plus.

I've generally been pleased with the 874s - though always bought on import from the US. It takes a while for them to arrive, but keeps the price down to about forty notes including shipping, as opposed to the £70-odds a pair costs from a UK supplier. Over here they're sold as a lifestyle product rather than workwear, hence the upcharge... Like back in the 80s when people were paying fifty quid a pair for 501s in 80s money... (that'd be about double that today, way over what they actually sell for now). I wear them like jeans as well as for the office - then being cheap but a decent cut is a big part of it. Not every day is suitable for either jeans or a par of trousers I'll have to wait til payday to replace.

I looked at Dickies website. I'm not sold. I would be afraid to wear those. Almost like bell bottoms. They could get caught in a bike chain, or machinery.

Dickies photos must sell them to a target audience, but they really don't do them any favours. I was lucky I wasn't put off the 874s by their photos that make them look skinny fit... A little wider appeals to me, though. In the photo they look strange here as they're being worn long, piled up on the shoe at the front. Definitely creates that ugly bell-bottom look. Length is good for me, though, as I always cuff 'em.

Main thin I can't figure from the photos is the rise - if only they'd confirm whether these are the same or lower rise than the 874... Nothing on the site anywhere that explains that that I can find. The rise looks low, but then the photos of the 874 make the rise look low as well, but it does sit on my natural waist... I can only assume it's not something the target customer cares about, but for me it makes all the difference between buying and not.

Dickies was just purchased by Bluetstar Alliance. See what they do with it. Recently purchased some items off the website and their denim shirts this year are made with exceptional material in Bangladesh of all places. The 874 is much thinner than past years BUT that is actually a plus for wearing them in warmer weather which I do.
Meanwhile all the legend pieces are selling out online and now hard to find. Ie. Diamond quilted nylon vest Navy small > NOBODY got it !

That's going to be interesting. I hope they don't pivot them to a lifestyle brand in the US the way they have over here!

IMO the 874 work pants were pretty overrated because of the 60/40 fabric. The heavyweight duck canvas carpenter pants for the same price were a much better deal for me. I just wish they made a pair of 5 pocket pants with the same fabric.

But it's obvious that the brand is somewhat pivoting. They have changed the products around and a new website. Hopefully things aren't going for the worse.

Actually if you look on the BA website that it exactly what they do :) My hunch is they will try for a WIP / Carhartt approach.. an upper scale line then the regular workwear line. However IMO if they cannot stock their legend "since the beginning " pieces then they are going to have a very hard time keeping up with the market.

I used to be a huge Carhartt fan but they lost the ability to make the items which brought me to them in the first place.

Get a denim shirt though...don't sleep on that deal.

There's a Carhartt store in Covent Garden I've never been in, keep meaning to drop by. Had a pair of their jeans I quite liked many years ago, though across the board they are a bit pricey over here.
