The pockets are functional, so an unusual method of sewing?

Uncommon, perhaps, but I have seen it quite often on older jackets and overcoats, either as a flap for a patch pocket or simply concealing a jetted pocket.

I've seen it for patch pockets often enough, it was covering the jetted pocket that's new. Learn something every day.

And has similar writing on the sleeve lining, so I would suspect it was a film costume at some point in its life.
