Dress code

Slightly off topic but still.

My dear mother always goes on about how I should not wear my brown Fed with my black suit, or black anything infact.

That got me thinking a bit, should I wear brown hat with black dress?

Please share your thoughts on what goes well with the various colours of hat and visa versa. Pictures appreciated.

Newteh, The answer to your question could depend on how old you are. If you are under the age of majority (in UK), pay attention to your mother. If you have passed majority, experiment with what you like and accept feedback from others. When I mix brown with black, I try to make it two brown items, instead of just one (hat & tie, hat& shoes).

Hey Newteh,

I reckon it depends on the shade of brown. Depending on the shade, you could get away with a black ribbon on it (like some of the Indy style brown fedoras have), and with a black ribbon on the hat, there would be a colour connection down to your clothes. Then, as JT said, connect further by wearing (for example) a brown tie to reinforce the coherence of the entire outfit.

Something like that might also be very sensitive to your own colouring. I have tried my Fed Dlx with black jackets, and despite being very dark haired/dark eyed, it just doesn't look right on me.

It does, however, seem to work when I wear the same hat with a couple of dark grey jacket I have.
