Death photo of WWII reporter Ernie Pyle surfaces, historians surprised

A photo of Ernie Pyle after being killed in World War II has surprised historians who never knew it existed.
Margaret Engel, the Newseum’s managing editor, says the photo is “of strong historic interest,” and because Pyle died at the height of his fame, “the circumstances of his death ... remain a compelling story for students of journalism and the war.”

This is quite the story and a powerful image.
The photo looks posed and reminds me of certain staged Civil War photos.
Could the body of Pyle have been manipuliated into that peaceful position before the photo was taken?

I'm more struck by the coincidence that the AP writer covering this story is also named PYLE.
