First attempt at a Bogie fedora

You guys know that I normally only make the Indy fedoras. I knew sooner or later I would be asked to try and copy a Bogie. A fan sent me some pics of the Maltese Falcon fedora and here is my first one. Bogey

Now, I think that if my bodies were thinner, this hat would have turned out better, especially regarding the top crease. Some of the look really needs an Optimo type dress felt to replicate, but this one isn't too bad. And, if I had to do this one over, I would have blocked it at 5 3/4 instead of the 5 1/2, to allow for just a bit more top to crease down. That too, would solve some of the top crease shortcomings, IMHO.

Anyways, if anyone wants to critique, I am all ears. Tell me what needs to be improved, and you can bet it will be incorporated on the next one that I make. Suggestions? Thanks. Fedora

having one of your 100% beaver bodied hats, I can say that both of your suggestions would probably do the trick. Since I shape mine different anyway, (with a center dent,) it didn't make much difference. But with the thicker felt of the beaver I can see where it would be more difficult to shape the crown in a tear drop style. Are the rabbit bodies you carry thinner?

Fedora,

The profile looks pretty good, though the brim looks maybe a tad too big. What is the brim width? Almost looks dimensional from the front.

Blocking it at 5 3/4 would look better.

Can you get a thinner felt?

Overall, it looks like the makings of a pretty good Bogie!

A picture is worth

Nice.
I thought yours was a little too pinched, but not.

Yes, I agree. Now that I look at it again, I should have put both hands on the side/top of the crown, clapped, and put a bit of taper in it. But, actually, I think I may have done that,as I worked on the style job after took this pic. I just made a hat in this color,in rabbit, and the felt is much looser, and looks like it would take that top crease very well. Might have to try it. Fedora

Looks pretty good, but my eyes want some kind of brim treatment.

Good first effort

I think that's an important point. Bogart always seems to have
a Cavanagh-like edge to his hats.

I will have to watch The Maltese Falcon again
to spot the FL mug...
