Also, the fedora is a bit more of a "working hat" with it's wider brim to keep rain, snow, etc off as opposed to a derby. As one poster noted, too, the automobile with an enclosed top was becoming more common, it is easier with a lower crown to enter and exit. This would readily explain the popularity of the newsboy style, too. Also, we see even today, the new style trend to change for the sake of change, or what a celebrity is wearing.

Except the height difference between the crown of a Derby and a fedora was negligible. In fact, by the late '20s, fedora crowns were actually much taller than Derbies. The brim width weather factor is good, though, with more men commuting into and throughout the city.

Derbies, though the brims are shorter, are nearly waterproof, while fedoras are more "water resistant". It would also be odd for fedoras to become working hats, when derbies were invented for servants.
